Tanauan is a Filipino municipality in the province of Leyte on the island of Leyte . It has 55,021 inhabitants (August 1, 2015 census) who live in 54 barangays . The community is described as partially urban and belongs to the second income bracket of the communities in the Philippines.
Their neighboring communities are Pastrana and Tabontabon in the west, Palo in the north and Tolosa in the south. Tanauan borders the Gulf of Leyte to the east . The community was named after the Tan-awan tree (Latin: Vitex parviflora ), from which guards used to warn of approaching ships. The municipality is located in the coastal area of the Leyte-Sab-a-Basin , which spreads to the northwest and in which there is an extensive marshland .
