Tarabuquillo is a town in the Chuquisaca department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Tarabuquillo is a municipality in the southern part of the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Tomina in the province of Tomina . The village is located at an altitude of 2276  m on the Río Tarabuquillo , which flows a few kilometers downstream into the Río Tomina , which leads north to the Río Grande . The mountain ranges near Tarabuquillo, which run from north to south, reach heights of up to over 2700 m.

Tarabuquillo lies in the transition area between the Andes mountain range of the Cordillera Central and the Bolivian lowlands. The climate of the region is semi-humid and a typical daytime climate , in which the mean temperature fluctuations between day and night are more pronounced than between the seasons.

The average annual temperature in the region is around 19 ° C (see Tomina climate diagram) and fluctuates only slightly between 16 ° C in June and July and almost 21 ° C from November to January. The annual precipitation is about 600 mm, with a pronounced dry season from April to September with monthly precipitation below 25 mm, and a humidity period from December to February with 100 to 125 mm monthly precipitation.

Transport network

Tarabuquillo is 178 kilometers by road southeast of Sucre , the capital of the department.

From Sucre, the 976 kilometer long highway Ruta 6 leads in a south-easterly direction via Zudáñez , Tarabuco and Yamparáez to Tomina and on to Padilla and from there into the Bolivian lowlands.

Eight kilometers south of Tomina at the confluence of the Río Tarabuquillo in the Río Tomina , a dirt road branches off in a southerly direction, follows the Río Tarabuquillo upwards and after fifteen kilometers reaches the town of Tarabuquillo . The road then continues south over a pass height of 2,420 m to Sopachuy and Azurduy .

Due to the historical population development, a significant proportion of indigenous people live in the region , 94.0 percent of the inhabitants speak Quechua in the municipality of Sopachuy .
