At the end of the world (working title "Die Orarians") is the 385th episode of the crime series Tatort from 1998. The film was produced by Swiss television under the direction of Helmut Förnbacher and first broadcast on May 3, 1998.

The Bern commissioners are confronted with a religious community of mountain farmers.

action

As if in a fog, a young man drives in snake lines through hilly and winding forest terrain in the Bernese Jura . Shortly before a steep drop he comes to a stop and gets out of the car. As if moved by magic, the VW Golf suddenly rolls off and pulls its driver with it into the depths. Since it is not only the fourth unresolved case in this regard, Philipp von Burg and Markus Gertsch from Bern are to investigate. In addition, the dead man was the son of the President of the Bar Association, Antoine Grossenbacher, who immediately pulled out all the stops, appeared at the scene and expressed his conviction that it was not an accident.

von Burg and Gertsch stay in the inn "At the end of the world" and only learn from the landlady, Clara Bürki, that the deceased felt drawn to the mountain farmers, but that this was not based on mutuality. Alain Grossenbacher's surveyor colleagues cannot contribute much either. The mountain farmers shoot the bird, not even saying "Hello!" say so that the "filth of the sinful world is not carried into their community".

At the scene of the crime, Sandra Bürki hands them a notebook that she allegedly found next to the dead man. There are meticulously recorded environmental offenses that lead the investigators to the Schertenleib electroplating company . And in fact, used acid baths are channeled into the stream there under cover of darkness. Schertenleib would have a solid motif.

The next suspect is the heavily indebted stud owner Ernst Brechbühl, who not only mourned the same accidental death of his son, but also relocated his property in his favor. Meanwhile, the blatant warnings against Gertsch and von Burg are increasing.

Suddenly, a handful of mountain farmers would like to make a statement and they are all straining Schertenleib, who is said to have been sitting next to Alain Grossenbacher in the VW Golf on the evening in question. Gertsch tries to use his apparent trust in Barbara Leuenberger for a specific reference. He learns from her that her sister Therese Leuenberger had a boyfriend. Then he is intercepted by Leuenberger, who gives him a henbane tea, which leads to dizziness. Nevertheless, he sits down in his car and drives from the yard. The images of Alain Grossenbacher's trip are repeated. Ironically, it stops right in front of the steep drop. He is brought to the inn by Clara Bürki, who arrives shortly afterwards, and suggests that Therese Leuenberger was pregnant when she drowned. This realization now also threatens the life of Barbara Leuenberger, who promptly has to appear before a Last Judgment of the Orarians. Shortly before their execution, the investigators arrive and arrest Leuenberger.
