occupation

Hopeless is an episode of the German television crime series Tatort from 2008. The film by Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk was first broadcast on July 6, 2008 on Das Erste . It is the 701st crime scene episode and the second case with the Leipzig investigator duo Saalfeld and Keppler . The murder of a young woman confronts the commissioners with the issue of illegal surrogacy .

action

A young woman is found dead near the city park next to recycling bins. With the help of the wedding date from your wedding ring, the identity can be determined. It is Susanne Körting, who recently separated from her husband. The pathologist found massive skull injuries, from which she also died. What is more surprising, however, is the finding that she must have recently given birth and also breastfed. When the husband is asked about this, he says that there is no child because it died in childbirth. He can produce an alibi for the time of the crime.

Keppler inquires with Dr. Wagner, Susanne Körting's gynecologist, who claims, however, that he did not know about pregnancy. Saalfeld is convinced that there must be a child who may have been kidnapped. Since she lost her child some time ago, this case is particularly close to her. Shortly afterwards, an empty stroller is found with traces of blood from the dead. Keppler succeeds in locating the shop in which the stroller was bought and learns there that Susanne Körting has bought the same stroller twice within a short period of time.

The last job of the dead can be determined via the tax office. There, Saalfeld and Keppler inquire about Susanne and find out that Peter Marquardt has hired her as a pregnancy substitute for his wife. Since she was pregnant herself, she would have advised him to choose and buy a stroller for his wife. Before she came to him, she would have worked for a trade fair construction company and given up because of an affair with her boss. Saalfeld speaks to Jörg Grabosch, who confirms the relationship with his former secretary. He can also provide an alibi for the time of the crime.

In the meantime, another woman's body has been found, whose identity cannot be determined immediately either. The front door key that she has with her is registered, so the associated apartment can be determined. When Saalfeld looks around the apartment, she is surprised to find Jörg Grabosch there. He states that the apartment belongs to him and that he rented it to Susanne Körting, as she needed accommodation after separating from her husband. He admits to having had sexual contact with her more often and in return, her husband received orders from him. The child would not have been from him, however. Keppler finds out that the second body is Karin Meckel, who works as a midwife and is employed by Susanne Körting's gynecologist. Since she most likely accompanied Susanne during a home birth, it must be explained why she had her apartment key with her.

Keppler interrogates Dr. Wagner, and he finally admits to having helped Julia Marquardt to have a child. While Julia only pretended to be pregnant, Susanne carried Peter Marquardt's child to term, which was conceived in practice through artificial insemination. The delivery took place in Körting's apartment with the help of Karin Meckel.

Saalfeld confronts the Marquardts and so they admit that Susanne Körting has made herself available as a surrogate mother for them. But even though she had already received a deposit, she changed her mind and wanted to keep the child. As a result, Peter Marquardt took the child away from Susanne and because she did not want to give it up, he killed her in the fight. Karin Meckel wanted to go to the police after she found out about the murder. So he didn't know any other way out and he killed her too.

Reviews

Tilmann P. Gangloff from tittelbach.tv praises this Leipzig crime scene as: “worth seeing [...] [with] good twists, top cast and convincingly staged.” He feels the story as “masterfully opaque: the police are first pounding completely in the dark, repeatedly goes on completely wrong tracks and always finds out only half the truth. [...] How appealingly Pflüger constructed his thriller becomes apparent after around two thirds when the case takes a completely different turn than the viewer suspects.

In Quotenmeter.de Fabian Riedner criticized the episode positively and thinks that they are "very convincing and very [can]. Not only the actors Simone Thomalla and Martin Wuttke are excellent, but also the constructed story, which is explained to the viewer through minor comments. Because this is not stereotypical, but has its own very special characteristics and could not have been better made by American authors. [...] The characters harmonize and, due to the past, offer enough potential for conflict. [Only] the beginning of the episode [...] didn’t turn out particularly great and the second half also lost [...] a lot of speed and ended quite unspectacularly. Nevertheless, the «Tatort» is one of a series of television productions that you can watch with a clear conscience. "

At Stern.de, Kathrin Buchner says: “Unfortunately, there is nothing too exciting to report about this second case by the new Leipzig“ Tatort ”team of investigators. The episode "Hopelessly" is about the realization of dreams and how people cross borders in order to make their longings come true, be it money or life. And catapult yourself into the sidelines. "Kathrin Buchner criticizes the whole thing as being too" confused and the [...] story of surrogacy and artificial insemination [is] pathetic, lengthy and tenacious. [...] [The] confusion in the narrative structure, the desperate, lethargic style of play of the protagonists adds little to the tension. [..] [There is a lack of speed, wit and forward thinking. "

The critics of the television magazine TV-Spielfilm judge that in this episode "unfortunately the tension is suffering from the private problems of the investigators [...]." Otherwise it is an "interesting case with [a little] too much ballast"
