action

The Stuttgart fire brigade has been dealing with a "fire devil" in recent months. However, there was one fatality in the last fire. The inspectors Bienzle and Gächter are called and start the investigation. The burned building belongs to the building yard of the entrepreneur Hohlbein, who identifies the victim as his tenant. Meanwhile, Gächter discovers the journalist Rosita Ianescu near the fire, who pretends to be working on research.

After the forensic technicians have carefully examined the source of the fire, it turns out that, as in the last fires, the perpetrator “built in” a so-called double deflagration . This suggests that this time it is the same perpetrator who worked very professionally. Bienzle thinks it is possible that it could even have been a firefighter. He then has the people from the fire station south checked, which goes against the manager Klaus Stöckle very much.

The coroner found that the dead did not die from the burn injuries, but had previously suffered a broken neck. The victim can be identified as a former member of the Romanian secret police Securitate via a conspicuous tattoo . This is also confirmed by the journalist Ianescu. She knows that this Josef Popescu worked here in Germany as a debt collector. In this way, Bienzle finds a trace of the fireman Frank Sobor, who verifiably knew Popescu and had an argument with him. Just as Bienzle is about to question Sobor, a fire alarm is triggered and the crew of the entire fire station has to go out to extinguish the fire. Sobor is slightly injured and has to be taken to the clinic. Therefore, Bienzle Sobor's colleague and best friend Paul Henzler, who reacts noticeably nervous to the inspector's questions. He learns that Henzler owes the building contractor Hotterbach and that Popescu was employed as a debt collector for him. Since he was not squeamish in his choice of means, he had massively threatened Henzler's family, whereupon Henzler's wife and their two children moved to their parents.

It is clear from photos that the journalist took while monitoring Popescu that Sobor and Henzler were at Popescu's shortly before the fire. Henzler then confesses to having defended himself against the man when he again asked for the money and now threatened him with a knife. Popescu fell out of the window and together with Sobor he brought him to his apartment and set it on fire. Sobor had the idea to disguise the dead as a burnt offering and so it turns out that he is the "fire devil". As a fire expert, he was attracted by the challenge and the search for the "perfect fire" that he could "control alone because he knew how it worked."
