Tauramena is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Casanare in Colombia .

geography

Tauramena is located in the southwest of Casanare at an altitude of about 460 meters at the foot of the Andes in the Colombian Llanos . The average temperature is 25 ° C, the maximum temperature is between 33 and 39 ° C and the minimum temperature is 12 to 19 ° C. The municipality borders Chámeza , Recetor and Aguazul in the north, Aguazul and Maní in the east, Cabuyaro in the Department del Meta in the south and Villanueva and Monterrey and Páez in the Boyacá department in the west .

history

Tauramena was founded in 1887 as San Guillermo de Tauramena . Originally, the area of today's community was from the indigenous people of Achaguas populated. During the colonial period, the order of the Augustinian recollects worked in the region . In the 1950s, the place suffered from the civil war that was raging in Colombia at the time and was set on fire, destroyed and temporarily abandoned. After the peace treaty, Tauramena was first a Corregimiento of Aguazul , before it received the status of a municipality in 1961.

economy

The main industry of Tauramena is the oil production . In addition, cattle and milk production , agriculture (especially rice , oil palms , maize , sugar cane and fruit are grown) and pond farming play an important role.

Tauramena has a small regional airport ( IATA code : TAU ). However, the community is easier to reach via Yopal Airport , which is 60 km away and is served by scheduled flights.
