Ted Morgan (actually: Edward Morgan ; born April 5, 1906 in East Ham , Greater London , † November 22, 1952 in Wellington ) was a New Zealand boxer . He was an Olympic welterweight champion in 1928.

Amateur career

Edward "Ted" Morgan grew up in Wellington, New Zealand and started boxing there as a teenager. At the age of 19, he was the first time New Zealand champion of the amateur lightweight in 1925. In 1927 he repeated this title win.

In 1928 he was sent to the Olympic Games in Amsterdam . He boxed welterweight there. Ted Morgan won in the round of 16 against the Swede Selfried Johansson by knockout in the 2nd round and won in the quarter and semi-finals over Romano Caneva from Italy and Robert Galataud from France on points. In the final he faced the Argentine Raúl Landini . Ted Morgan sustained a painful injury to the knuckle of his left hand in the preliminary fights. But he got through the fight and won on points thanks to a strong final sprint in the third round. He was Olympic champion in 1928 in the welterweight division.

After his Olympic victory, Ted Morgan joined professional boxers. As an amateur, he had contested 28 fights, of which he won 26.

Profile career

As a professional boxer, Ted Morgan fought almost exclusively in New Zealand. He boxed only once in the United States and twice in Australia . He made his professional debut on September 28, 1929 in Dunedin / New Zealand with a knockout victory in the 5th round over his compatriot Steve Hughes.

On January 30, 1930 he boxed in Hastings / New Zealand against Artie Hay for the New Zealand welterweight championship, but lost by disqualification in the 5th round. On August 20, 1931, he succeeded in Wellington with a techn. Knockout victory in the 2nd round over Reg Trowern to become New Zealand welterweight champion.

On May 30, 1932 he tried in Sydney fighting against Willy Hancock and Australian welterweight champion to be. The attempt went wrong, because he lost this fight in the first round by knockout. On October 10, 1933 he managed to defend his New Zealand title in Nelson / New Zealand by winning points after 15 rounds over Gus Fitzmaurice. On October 9, 1934, he lost this title after all, when he was in Oamaru / New Zealand against Don Stirling by techn. KO in the 15th round lost.

Overall, Ted Morgan's career was not very successful. He played a total of 24 fights, of which he won 11 and lost 11, 2 fights ended in a draw.
