Geography and naming

Before the Havel reaches Caputh in its broad, lake-like course from Potsdam southwards, a headland jumps into the river. This horn is called the Templin . In the area of the Templin there is a small settlement, which is also called Templin. However, it has no local political status in the urban structure of Potsdam. This name does not appear as a name for the settlement in the more recent topographic map 1: 25,000 (No. 3644 Potsdam). The Templin lido is (still) drawn. At the end of October 2008, the settlement had 43 residents.

The settlement is the namesake for the large Havelsee (Templiner See), for the Templin suburb and for the "Forsthaus Templin" at the "Waldbad Templin" (formerly "Strandbad Templin"). The " Marienquelle " is located near Templin .

Older story

The name Templin is derived from a late Slavic-Early German settlement of this name, which was on the horn called "the Templin" and is documented by broken fragments. However, it is not directly documented. The historical local lexicon mentions a Petrus Tempellin in Treuenbrietzen for 1337/8, who (very probably) named himself after this place. The name is derived from a Polabian basic form * Tąp-lin , to a personal name * Tąp-la , with an l-suffix to an urslaw. * Tǫь dull, was formed foolish. In the north-west Slavic regions, place name formations from personal names with an l-suffix are common. The place is no longer mentioned in Charles IV's land register from 1375. The Liesdorf an der Nuthe settlement , which is also no longer mentioned in the land register, also fell in desolation very early . The field markers of the two settlements have taken the tip of the land spur, which is formed by the Havel in the west and the Nuthe in the east. While the field mark of Liesdorf was still used later, the field mark of Templin was completely forested and around 1850 belonged to the forest estate district of Plantagenhaus and thus to the Potsdam office .

Recent history

The Templin, with its low and sandy areas and direct access to the water, was an ideal location for a bleaching facility . On March 16, 1748, Christoph Andreas Martin received permission to build a bleaching site in this area for his barchent and canvas factory. In 1756 permission followed to build a linen weaver's house with free wood. In the course of the following decades, this was expanded into an estate with a plantation of nut and mulberry trees.

The former French ambassador in Berlin, Marquis de Moustier , bought the property as an emigrant in 1796, but then left the property to deteriorate. On December 15, 1797, Canon Arnold Dietrich Tamm took over the estate and expanded it into a mansion. On July 9, 1819, General Friedrich Adolf Ludwig von Bismarck (an uncle of Otto von Bismarck ) bought the "luxury goods"

The estate was sold in 1834 to the merchant Eduard Reinhardt, who set up a tobacco shop there and thus founded a new restaurant on the way between Potsdam and Caputh . The bailiff Haupt as a farmer and innkeeper founded a tobacco shop in one of the buildings in 1840, the first inn.

New forester's house on Templiner Strasse

On November 5, 1846, a fire destroyed the main building of the old manor. King Friedrich Wilhelm IV wanted a small “Bavarian house” to be built, but this was not realized. For this a forester's house was built , in which forest officials from Caputh soon had to do their duty. In 1849 the Havelweg was expanded to become a Chaussee. This was carried out as emergency work for the needy weavers von Nowawes and thus also contributed to their pacification in the final phase of the democratic revolution in Prussia . Friedrich Wilhelm IV had taken a liking to the "Tabagie" and it is said that he had the intention "to buy into Templin, to build stylish buildings there and to transform the steep forest banks into hanging gardens". The Tabagie has been a restaurant ever since. Unused between 1997 and 2002, it has been operated as a brewery factory in Potsdam Forsthaus Templin since 2003 .

In the 20th century, the forest pool Templin was restored from the areas of the former Templin on the banks of the Havel Bay. A large parking lot offers parking spaces and a Potsdam bus line brings guests here.

Transport links

In the immediate vicinity of the forester's house Templin there is a landing stage for the Weisse Flotte Potsdam and the Potsdam water taxi . Bus 607 runs from Potsdam Central Station every one to two hour via Templin to Caputh.
