history

The Merdicas / Mardicas were a tribe of Malay ethnic group from the island of Ternate in the Moluccas (now part of Indonesia ), at that time a small Spanish colony. Mardicas means something like "people of the sea". Originally seven families with the surnames Nino Franco, De Leon, Ramos, De la Cruz, Esteubar, Pereira, and Nigoza came to Cavite in 1574 to help the Spaniards defend the Chinese pirate Lin Feng from the threat of pirate incursions . However, the feared raids did not materialize and the Merdicas settled in one place in Cavite. This settlement with the name Gilolo was initially named after a native tree species that was also native to their homeland in the Moluccas. The name was later changed to Barra de Maragondon , today the place is called Ternate. A Chabacano language, Spanish Creole languages spoken in the Philippines, is still used in Ternate today.

In 1663, some Merdicas received an order from the Governor General of the Philippines to settle in Bagumbayan (now Ermita ) to defend Manila . About 200 of them fought against Moros pirates.
