history
The original inhabitants of Terrigal were Aboriginal people from the Awabakal or Guringgai tribe. The following is known about the latter tribe: The members wore girdles that held their few possessions and, occasionally, an item of possum fur . The men had spears, boomerangs , stone axes, and shields. They hunted large prey such as kangaroos and fish that they impaled. However, the women contributed most of the food: fish (caught with a fishing line), shellfish, fruits, tubers, insect larvae, snakes, lizards and small mammals.
The first European settler was John Gray, who came to the area in 1826 and named his property "Tarrygal". It was the place name of the Aborigines, which means "place of the little birds".
Thomas Davis set up a sawmill in the area in the 1870s. It employed 120 men, including 70 carters , to move logs, and operated a tram to deliver timber to a jetty for shipping to Sydney .
The dairy industry later became important to the local economy. Tourism began to play a role in the late 19th century when the focus was shifted to health and recreational opportunities. The completion of the Sydney to Newcastle railway line in 1889 and the construction of the country roads made the area open to the general public.
Today Terrigal is one of the most popular residential, vacation, and retirement centers in the Central Coast region . Visitors come for fishing, swimming, surfing, boating, water skiing, and for the natural scenery. A little north on the coast is the Wyrrabalong National Park , further south the Bouddi National Park . Anglers can catch snapper , flathead and jewfish (Argyrosomus japonicus) offshore, and bream , flathead and black gnawing bass in the surf .

The characteristic peculiarity of Terrigal is the headland Broken Head , which closes the Bay of Terrigal in the southeast. The northern part of the headland is quite wide and flat and forms an open, grassy parkland. In the southern part rises The Skillion , the local symbol of Terrigal. This narrow section of the shore of the headland rises quickly over a very short distance in an easterly direction to a considerable height, but can be climbed without any problems over the wide ridge. The Aborigines of the Awabakal tribe call this place Kurawyba .
