Apostle! ( The Apostle ) is an American drama from 1997 . It was directed by Robert Duvall , who also wrote the script, produced the film and took on the lead role.

action

The married preacher Euliss F. Dewey, nicknamed Sonny, lives in Texas . His wife Jessie has an affair with Horace, Sonny hurt in the affect, after which Horace falls into a coma .

Sonny leaves town and moves to Louisiana , where he uses the name Apostle EF . He initially worked as a technician at a radio station, where the station owner allowed him to preach a sermon. Then makes Apostle EF career as an occurring in the media preacher. His wife hears one of his sermons and notifies the police. The police wait for a sermon to end and arrest Sonny, who is shown during the credits as a prisoner preaching in prison.

Its atmosphere is " descriptive " and " primarily non-commentary "; it provides " illuminating insights into a world of American piety, in which elements such as entertainment and movement are central ".

Cinema magazine wrote that Robert Duvall was a convincing “ charismatic preacher ”. He was " never better than in this drama ". As a director, Duvall “makes the atmosphere in the oppressively hot, newly renovated little church tangible through long shots ” and avoids “ dramatic cuts ”. However, the action is predictable.
