action

season 1

The 17-year-old James considers himself a psychopath and is planning his first murder of a human - so it is just right that the new student Alyssa suddenly approaches him. Alyssa can no longer stand it with her mother and her new partner and convince James to run away with her. While Alyssa hopes to find her father, James plans to murder her at the first opportunity. So the two of them find themselves on a road trip that quickly gets out of hand and soon makes it impossible for them to go back.

After driving James' father's car into a tree, the two switch to hitchhiking. So they get to know an army veteran who is friendly at first, but who wants to assault James at the first opportunity. Thanks to Alyssa's courageous intervention, the two not only get rid of him, but also come into possession of a large amount of money. You spend the night in a hotel and then continue on foot.

Alyssa wants to delay the meeting with her father and suggests a "short vacation". They break into a seemingly uninhabited house and have a good time - until the homeowner comes back that night, turns out to be a psychopath and tries to rape Alyssa. James kills him with his hunting knife to save Alyssa. During the subsequent escape, everything suddenly changes: James realizes that he is not a psychopath and that he develops deep feelings for Alyssa, while in her shock she now sees James as the murderer and flees from him.

During the brief separation, both manage to overcome the first shock and find each other again. They steal a car and find Alyssa's father. He takes them both in his caravan and inspires his daughter with his unconventional lifestyle and the warmth with which he welcomes her. But even this first impression quickly turns out to be deceptive. It turns out he has another son he doesn't care about; that it wasn't he who wrote her a card every year for her birthday, but her mother, and that he wants to betray the two of them to the police for the reward they have been given. It comes to an escalation in which Alyssa's father and a commissioner are injured.

While fleeing the police, James knocks down Alyssa to protect her from the legal consequences of her actions. He runs away, the picture goes black and a shot is fired.

season 2

The second season takes place two years after the events of the first. James was shot and relearned to walk after several operations. At Alyssa, urged by her mother, he wrote a farewell letter. Alyssa had to do community hours and lives with her mother with her half-sister.

The first episode shows how a young woman named Bonnie, who in her childhood always had to suffer from the heavy pressure of her mother and could not study, sneaks secretly into the lectures. The professor is the man James stabbed to death in season 1. He starts an affair with Bonnie so that she can attend his lectures and plays her a love affair. Bonnie catches him with another student and then kills her. That's why Bonnie is in jail. There she learns that her "friend" was killed. At the beginning of the main story, Bonnie is released from prison and wants revenge on Alyssa.

After the death of his father, James tracks down Alyssa and wants to confess his love to her. When he learns that Alyssa is about to get married, he starts stalking her . On the eve of the wedding, she notices James and confronts him. From then on she is torn between James and her fiancé Todd. After the wedding, Alyssa escapes with James. In the forest the two take Bonnie with them as a supposed hitchhiker.

Bonnie, James, and Alyssa stay in a motel after Bonnie James sabotaged a car. While James and Alyssa kiss, the motel owner harasses Bonnie. She threatens him with a gun when a shot goes off and fatally hits the owner in the head.

James and Alyssa leave alone the next morning because Alyssa wants to go back to her family. They leave Bonnie shocked by their deed. Alyssa leaves James and seeks Todd, who forgives her and plans their future together. Alyssa then tells him that she wants to get a divorce.

At Alyssa's place of work, her aunt's cafe, Bonnie and Alyssa confront when James joins them. Alyssa tells Bonnie about the professor's attempt to rape her and how it traumatized her. Bonnie doesn't believe her and wants to shoot both of them, but can't stand the idea and wants to take their own lives, whereupon James and Alyssa overpower them. She is arrested by the police.

Alyssa flees to her tormentor's house to get rid of the trauma. James follows her and takes her to the place where his parents fell in love. There he scattered his father's ashes. They confess their mutual love for one another.

reception

Axel Schmitt from the industry portal Serienjunkies.de gives the pilot episode a full five stars and finds The End of the F *** ing World both the "truly dreary visual implementation and the excellent acting performances of the two main actors [...] fascinating" as well as "the merciless uncompromisingness with which they view the desolation of their own existence ”. The “two depressed 17-year-olds” set out on a “road trip into the unknown”, “to escape the domestic narrowness and narrow-mindedness”.

Sonja Tomaser says in the Frankfurter Rundschau that the series shows how difficult life as a teenager is when you are different and have to deal with strokes of fate such as death or rejection by your own parents. Here profound truths about life are offered: Sometimes "the radical break is the only way out to find yourself."
