action

Mary and Joseph give a surprise party for Jesus' 30th birthday, to which the latter returns after 40 days in the desert. The three holy kings and God (disguised as Uncle Vittorio), of whom Joseph is jealous, appear as guests. After Jesus brought his new partner Orlando with him from the desert, Mary, Joseph and Uncle Vittorio reveal to him that the latter is actually God and his Father and that he can now work miracles and has the task of spreading the word of God that Jesus spoke of But initially rejects confusion. While the other three want to give him time to deal with the news, God chases after Mary and tries to persuade her to run away with him. When she wants to return to Jesus, Orlando blocks her way: Jesus lay down after consuming one of Joseph's tea, but it was drugged. Jesus hallucinates seeing key figures from other religions and disappears for a week. When he finds his home, Orlando reveals himself to be Lucifer. He incapacitates God, freezes Joseph and makes Mary willless. Jesus seems to be defeated in the fight against him at first, but can then win when he realizes that he is in everyone as God and thus bursts Orlando from inside his body. In the following conversation with his parents, Jesus is still skeptical about his mission because of his father's deeds in the Old Testament, but he agrees to the suggestion of a three-year internship on the condition that he can choose his 12 male companions .

reception

The film has an audience rating of 4.5 / 10 with over 1,700 ratings on the Internet Movie Database and an audience rating of 24% with 49 ratings on Rotten Tomatoes . He receives mixed judgments from critics: Roger Moore from Movie Nation awards 3.5 out of 5 stars and thinks the film is quite funny. He compares it to Key & Peele and a particularly blasphemous Monty Python sketch. Greg Wheeler of The Review Geek gives a 7.5 out of 10 and says the movie isn't as good as last year's Christmas special, The Last Hangover , but it's still hilarious. Anyone who is a fan of the former will have a good time with this too; whoever is not a fan of the former will not waver in his opinion even because of the former. John Serba for Decider praises the portrayal of the arrogant God, but recommends skipping the film. The execution of the concept is at best moderately amusing and the portrayal of the gay Orlando problematic. Jessica Mason from The Mary Sue also comes up against this : The film is not particularly funny, the humor is based on offending everyone. He is homophobic, racist, offensive to religions and just boring.

Protests and attack

The film has sparked strong protests in Brazil and internationally by Christians and politicians who accuse blasphemy and disrespect. Eduardo Bolsonaro, the son of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro , wrote on Twitter: “We are for freedom of expression, but is it worth an attack on the beliefs of 86 percent of the population?” Pastor and Congressman Marco Feliciano wrote that he was asked to to do something against the members of the Porta dos Fundos group. The Bishop of Palmares , Henrique Soares da Costa , claims to have deleted his Netflix account and describes the film as blasphemous, vulgar and disrespectful, as well as a slap in the face of all Christians. For Joel Theodor, pastor of the Igreja Presbiteriana do Brasil, it is equivalent to another crucifixion. A Brazilian petition on Change.org calling for the film to be removed from Netflix was signed by over 1 million people in one week, down from two in nearly 2 million.

The film's author and Porta dos Fundos actor, Fábio Porchat, replied on Twitter: "Folks, I cleared this with God. Everything is fine. Now you can get upset again about the inequality that is destroying our country. But please with the same passion, yes? " In an interview with Variety , he said that for the critics it was not a problem that Jesus used drugs in the film, but that he was homosexual, and judged that to be homophobic . He defended the film by stating that it was actually a Christian fairy tale because Jesus defeated the devil and in the end accepts his fate as God's Son.

On December 24, 2019, the Porta dos Fundos building in Rio de Janeiro was attacked with Molotov cocktails . The fire was kept under control by security personnel and no one was injured. The group announced that they had handed over recordings from the security camera to the authorities. In a video, a group called the Popular Nationalist Insurgency Command of the Large Brazilian Integralist Family, after right-wing extremist Brazilian Integralism , claimed responsibility for the attack and described the film as blasphemous.

On January 8, the judge Benedicto Abicair ordered in Rio de Janeiro that Netflix should remove the film from its program. The deletion is "not only beneficial for the Christian community, but also for Brazilian society, which is predominantly Christian". The chairman of the Brazilian Bar Association Felipe Santa Cruz criticizes this as censorship and regression. The following day, the Supreme Court in Rio de Janeiro overturned the verdict so that the film could continue to be shown. Dias Toffoli, the President of the Supreme Court, said freedom of expression is essential to democracy and that satire cannot violate Christian values.
