Henrique Soares da Costa

Henrique Soares da Costa (born April 11, 1963 in Penedo ; † July 18, 2020 in Recife ) was a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Palmares .

Life

Henrique Soares da Costa entered the religious seminary in Maceió at the age of 18 and completed a degree in philosophy at the Universidade Federal de Alagoas (Ufal) in 1984 . From 1985 to 1989 he was a novice in the São Bento monastery in Rio de Janeiro and in the Trappist monastery of Nossa Senhora do Novo Mundo. In 1990 he returned to the Maceió Seminary, where he attended the Faculty of Theology. The following year he went to Rome and completed a degree in dogmatic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University . He was ordained a priest on August 15, 1992 . From 1994 to 2009 he was rector of the Church of Nossa Senhora do Livramento in Maceió. He was professor of theology at the Provincial Seminary in Maceió and the theology course at the Continuing Education Center in Maceió. He was also professor at the Franciscan Theology Institute in Olinda (PE) and at the Sedes Sapientiae Institute in Recife. He was also a member of the Priestly Council of the Archdiocese of Maceió, Cabildo Metropolitano and Colégio de Consultores. He was also Episcopal Vicar for the Laity and Coordinator of the Civic Education Commission and responsible for the permanent deacons and the diaconal schools of the archdiocese.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on April 1, 2009 auxiliary bishop in Aracaju and titular bishop of Acufida . He was ordained episcopate on June 19 of the same year by the Archbishop of Maceió , Antônio Muniz Fernandes OCarm ; Co- consecrators were José Palmeira Lessa , Archbishop of Aracajú, and José Carlos Melo CM , Senior Archbishop of Maceió. As a motto he chose in Christo pascere : (the flock) “feed in Christ”, a quote from the famous sermon of St. Augustine “De pastoribus” on the example of the good shepherd ( Ez 34  EU ) and the tasks of the shepherds of souls ( pastors ). At the same time he took over the office of vicar general of Aracaju. He presented the Sunday program Hora Católica on Rádio Cultura de Sergipe .

Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Palmares on March 19, 2014 .

In the north-east of Region 2 of the National Bishops' Conference of Brazil (CNBB NE2) he was President of the Regional Pastoral Commission for Culture and Education and coordinator of the Commission for Civic Education, a columnist in several newspapers in the city of Maceió, in the Jornal da Cidade in Aracaju and an editor and columnist the archdiocesan newspaper O Semeador in Maceió .

Da Costa died on July 18, 2020 at the age of 57 in the Hospital Memorial São José in Recife as a result of COVID-19 . Dom Henrique was the third bishop to die in the past three months in the Nordeste 2 region, which includes the states of Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, and Alagoas. The others were Aldo de Cillo Pagotto , also a victim of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil , and Valério Breda , Bishop of Penedo (AL).
