The Godfather: The Saga is a four-part television version of the films The Godfather and The Godfather - Part II , which Francis Ford Coppola created in 1975 for NBC . It was first broadcast in November 1977.

Coppola created the television version of his box office hit to secure funding for his new film Apocalypse Now , which by the time was well over budget.

Changes

The story of the Corleone family is told in chronological order, starting with Vito Corleone's flight from Sicily to America - which originally only appears in the second part. Coppola compiled the film from the two theatrical versions and also used previously unseen scenes. These include

  • the attack on Don Fanucci
  • Vito Corleone's first meeting with Hyman Roth
  • Vito's murder of Don Ciccio's men
  • Michael Corleone's reunion with his father after his trip to Sicily
  • Sonny Corleone temporarily took over the family business after the attack on his father

The additional scenes are almost 75 minutes long. On the other hand, Coppola also took out some of the original scenes. He also reduced violence and sex scenes as well as the harshness of linguistic expressions for the television audience.

reception

According to Nielsen Ratings, the ratings success of the film when it was first broadcast fell short of expectations, which is attributed to the broadcast of the theatrical versions.
