Great Outdoors - Holiday threes ( The Great Outdoors ) is an American film comedy by Howard Deutch from the year 1988 .

Chet Ripley spends the summer vacation with his family in a log cabin in the mountains, far from civilization. There he would like to turtle with his wife Connie and teach his two sons to love nature, as his father did with him. The only problem: the relatives emerge unexpectedly in the form of his self-loving brother-in-law Roman Craig with his wife and two daughters. The luxury novel and the inconspicuous Chet don't understand each other at all. Roman finds this type of vacation just ridiculous, but that doesn't stop him from inviting himself and destroying the holiday idyll.

While the planned family vacation in nature degenerates into a gimmick by Roman, Chet doesn't really find access to his older son either. Because he has already fallen in love with a local girl and is fire and flame.

When the Ripley family finally pulls themselves up to advise the uninvited guests to leave, Roman plays a trump card. He offers Chet the chance to get into a surefire business for $ 25,000. Chet feels guilty and gives his brother-in-law a check. The Craigs leave, but Roman turns back, tears up the check and confesses to his brother-in-law that he actually wanted to trick him with his investment. He lost his place on the stock exchange through bad speculation and now only works as a delivery boy. With the money from Chet, he wanted to try to get back on his feet.

During a storm, the two Craig girls seek refuge in a cave. What they do not know is that this cave is inhabited by a bear that Chet allegedly met on his honeymoon and shaved his head with a bullet. So Chet and Craig have to form a unit here too to save the girls. After the two were brought back by Roman, Chet comes across the bear again, who immediately pursues him. Chet flees into the log cabin, whereupon the bear kicks in the door and threatens the family. At the last moment the bear is chased away by another rifle shot, which now shaves its bottom.

Meanwhile, his son has also reconciled with his vacation love. He had fallen from grace after missing a date.

The families start their journey home, with Roman calling out to his brother-in-law when he leaves that he wants to know who will get home sooner (Connie had invited him there because of the bad situation of the Craigs).

Reviews

Hal Hinson wrote in the Washington Post on June 17, 1988 that the comedy could be called "mediocre" if it made you laugh a little more often. It is just as "coarse" as "unreasonable". The actors are far from top form.
