The Last Hunt is an American Western by director Richard Brooks from the year 1956 , the hunting of bison in North America of the 19th century and the racism of whites against the Indians discussed. It is based on the novel of the same name by Milton Lott .
action
The legendary "buffalo" hunter Sandy McKenzie is tired of killing and hates his job. Not so with Charlie Gilson, an ex-soldier who wants McKenzie as a guide for a hunting trip. McKenzie has money worries and reluctantly agrees. The common foray through the north-west becomes a psycho trip. Gilson turns out to be a racist, sadistic and unpredictable misanthropist who unscrupulously shoots at Indians and suffers from paranoia.
When a group of Indians steals a horse, Gilson pursues and kills them. Only a pretty Indian girl and her small child remain alive and accompany the hunters from now on. While the girl is drawn to McKenzie, Gilson claims it for himself. As Gilson becomes more violent, McKenzie helps the girl and her child to escape. Gilson, who is becoming more and more insane, pursues the two and places them in front of a mountain cave. McKenzie and Gilson arrange to duel at sunrise, but Gilson freezes to death on the wintry prairie that night.
Cinematic
Robert Taylor , otherwise known more as a beau and with romantic roles, inspired the critics with his intense portrayal of the psychopathic Gilson.
Ten years later, turned Richard Brooks with The Professionals another late Western . As in The Last Hunt , he dealt critically with the previously rather idealized portrayal of the Wild West in Hollywood .
Reviews
"With wonderful landscapes and animals, this critical western tells of the dark side of the golden west, of the brutality of bison hunting," said Prisma . According to Cinema , "moralist" Richard Brooks turned this bad story into a powerful western. For the lexicon of international films , The Last Hunt was a "critical, well-acted western that shows the brutality of the buffalo hunt with extreme realism and puts the associated psychological and ideological motives up for discussion".
