action

In the early 1980s, the homosexual activist Ned Weeks wants to found an organization with which he wants to inform the public about a disease that was largely unknown at the time and which seems to affect mainly homosexual men. He asks his brother Ben for support, but he is only willing to give passive support, which ultimately leads to the alienation of the brothers.

Looking for support from the most influential US publisher, Ned falls in love with the New York Times editor, Felix Turner.

The AIDS epidemic is spreading meanwhile further and claims many victims - even under Ned's close friends. Finally, Felix also reveals that he is probably affected by the disease. Ned's organization elects Bruce Niles as its president. In contrast to Ned, Bruce is a rather reserved and polite fellow. There is a conflict between Ned and Bruce about the direction of the organization, even though both pursue the same goal. As the differences between the two come to a head, Ned is eventually fired from the organization's board of directors.

Felix's condition deteriorates and he eventually succumbs to the effects of AIDS.
