action

Pearl White works as a seamstress at Metropolitan Garments , but she really loves music and drama. When the well-known theater actress Julia Gibbs picks up a costume in the store one day, Pearl has just had an argument with her boss Joe Gurt. She should bring Julia the costume to the theater that evening. Since neither Julia nor the director of the theater company Michael Farrington can pay for the costume, Michael gives her the chance to audition instead. While the group prepares for their Shakespeare performance, Pearl interprets a musical number in front of the unprepared audience. Her performance is well received and Michael hires her for his group.

Actor Timmy Timmons helps her with her pronunciation, but it turns out that Pearl doesn't just speak carelessly. She's also an extremely bad actress. She plays over it, waves her arms around and creates chaos even in short appearances. When she is supposed to play a princess who is in love with Michael's character, it becomes apparent that Pearl actually loves Michael. He too begins to develop feelings for her. This changes suddenly when Pearl turns her actually emotional appearance into a laughing stock because she can hardly talk due to a sudden cold, but sneezes. Because Michael then treats her badly, Pearl quits. Julia is loyal and leaves the group too. The two women are now trying to find a new job at a theater together, but it's summer break. Her agent, however, puts her on the film, where Pearl soon becomes the star of a silent film series entitled The Perils of Pauline . In the short films, Pauline always goes through potentially fatal adventures.

During a shoot, Pearl sees Timmy again and lets him work as a partner in her films. While both are successful, Michael and his acting troupe dangle through fairs. Since Pearl cannot forget him, she seeks him out and makes him part of her films too. After initial problems with the new medium of film, he too played successfully at her side. Both get closer and when a stunt goes wrong and both fly away in a driverless balloon, he successfully proposes marriage to her. Back on earth, however, Michael realizes that he will always only stand in the shadow of Pearl. The media interest in the wedding also waned suddenly when the USA declared war on Germany . Michael and Timmy are drafted into the army. After the war, silent film series went out of fashion and Pearl left the film business. She goes to Paris with Julia and Timmy and becomes the star of the Casino de Paris . Michael, in turn, celebrates success on Broadway, but then also sets off for Paris to see Pearl again. She was seriously injured in a stunt on the last appearance before seeing them again and it is questionable whether she will ever walk properly again. That's why when she meets Michael she pretends that she no longer loves him. However, with Julia's help, he sees through them and they become a couple.

criticism

The New York Times noted that the film was hardly authentic; Rather, it serves Hutton as a vehicle and is completely tailored to her stormy temperament, even if a “stupid, sentimental climax almost makes the whole thing fall on the nose”. Pauline, let the kissing be "[d] ank of the spirited Betty Hutton a very funny grotesque comedy - and an interesting insight into the beginnings of silent film production," said the film service .

Awards
