The Plastic Ono Band is a musical group formed by John Lennon and Yoko Ono in 1969. The Plastic Ono Band did not have a permanent line-up.

history

John Lennon rehearsing Give Peace a Chance , 1969

The Plastic Ono Band was initially just a name under which John Lennon and Yoko Ono released their first single Give Peace a Chance in July 1969 . An actual group of the same name did not exist at that time. For a performance at the Toronto Rock and Roll Revival , a unique live band was put together in September 1969 under this name. Other members were Alan White , Klaus Voormann and Eric Clapton . The group had not completed a single rehearsal when they took the plane from London to Toronto. Therefore, rehearsals took place during the flight. John Lennon practiced some rock 'n' roll classics like Money (That's What I Want) and Blue Suede Shoes with the other band members . They also played the Beatles song Yer Blues from the so-called White Album and the new compositions Lennons, Cold Turkey and Give Peace a Chance . The other half of the repertoire consisted of Yoko Ono's compositions Don't Worry, Kyoko and John John (Let's Hope for Peace) . The appearance in Toronto also conveyed Yoko Ono's Bagism concept. She spent much of her time on stage wrapped in a white sack. The tracks she then sang were mostly only accompanied by guitar feedback . The Toronto concert was released in the same year as the LP Live Peace in Toronto 1969 . In April 1989, the video material of the Toronto concert, which had been kept under lock and key, was also published.

On September 30, 1969, the single Cold Turkey (John Lennon) / Don't Worry Kyoko (Mummy's Only Looking for Her Hand in the Snow) (Yoko Ono) was recorded with the cast: John Lennon (guitar and vocals), Eric Clapton (Guitar), Klaus Voormann (bass) and Ringo Starr (drums). On November 26, 1969, John Lennon and Yoko Ono finished the song What's the New Mary Jane , in which George Harrison was originally involved, to make it together with the Beatles song You Know My Name (Look Up the Number) on one Single to be released on December 5, 1969 (catalog number Apples 1002) - under the name Plastic Ono Band . When the rest of the Beatles found out about this plan, they immediately intervened and the single was withdrawn.

Another concert by the Plastic Ono Band took place in the Lyceum Ballroom in London on December 15, 1969. The motto was peace for christmas (Benefit for UNICEF ). In addition to Eric Clapton, Klaus Voormann, Alan White, Billy Preston and George Harrison , among others, took part in this performance , the music group name was Plastic Ono Supergroup .

On February 6, 1970, John Lennon recorded his single Instant Karma! with the American music producer Phil Spector in the following cast: Klaus Voormann, Alan White, Billy Preston, George Harrison and Mal Evans . Lennon's first solo album John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band (December 1970) and Yoko Ono's first solo album Yoko Ono / Plastic Ono Band (December 1970), recorded with Ringo Starr, Billy Preston and Klaus Voormann, were based on the experiences of the couple with the "primal scream" therapy of the American psychologist Arthur Janov .

In March 1971 the successful single Power to the People followed , which was politically motivated. The participating musicians were again Klaus Voormann and Billy Preston. The single God Save Us / Do the OZ was recorded in May 1971. Ringo Starr, Klaus Voormann and John Lennon acted as studio musicians, the A-side was sung by Bill Elliot and the B-side by Lennon. The publication took place under the pseudonym Elastic Oz Band .

His second album Imagine (September 1971) took John Lennon with George Harrison, Jim Keltner and Klaus Voormann as well as other musicians in May 1971 in Lennon's own studio, the Ascot Sound Studios in Tittenhurst Park. Yoko Ono's album Fly was also recorded there. In October 1971 the Christmas single Happy Xmas (War Is Over) was recorded, which was released in December 1971 in the USA and in November 1972 in Great Britain, only Klaus Voormann and Jim Keltner were already with previous line-ups.

The album Some Time in New York City was released under the artist name John and Yoko / Plastic Ono Band with Elephants Memory and Invisible Strings in June 1972, but only Jim Keltner from previous lineups was involved as a musician. Yoko Ono released two albums in 1973 in which the Plastic Ono Band was featured on the cover as a co-interpreter , but the Elephants Memory Band was again the backing band for Approximately Infinite Universe (January 1973) and the follow-up album Feeling the Space (November 1973) ) a new studio band was put together, again it was Jim Keltner who participated in earlier recordings. John Lennon took over the studio band for his album Mind Games (November 1973), but only mentioned his own name as an artist on the cover. On the inner sleeve of the record, the studio musicians were listed as a Plastic UFOno Band .

Yoko Ono undertook a tour in Japan from August 5 to 16, 1974 under the band name Yoko Ono & The Plastic Ono Super Band . Contributing musicians were David Spinozza (guitar), Sneaky Pete Kleinow ( steel guitar ), Ken Ascher ( keyboard ), Michael Brecker ( saxophone ), Gordon Edwards (bass) and Jim Keltner (drums).

In October 1974 Lennon's album Walls and Bridges followed , which the studio band called the Plastic Ono Nuclear Band on the inner sleeve of the record , this time again including Jim Keltner and Klaus Voormann. Another mention of the name Plastic Ono Band was made by John Lennon only on his compilation album Shaved Fish (October 1975).

In September 2009, Yoko Ono released the album Between My Head and the Sky under the artist name Yoko Ono / Plastic Ono Band, none of the original band members or studio musicians of the 1970s except Yoko Ono was when the Plastic Ono Band was founded. On February 16, 2010, however, the Plastic Ono Band performed with Eric Clapton, Klaus Voormann and Jim Keltner at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York. The first two musicians listed played with the live album Live Peace in Toronto in 1969 , while Jim Keltner was involved in several studio recordings of Yoko Ono and John Lennon as a drummer in the 1970s. In 2013, when Yoko Ono turned 80, the album Take Me to the Land of Hell was released in September , which in turn was released under the artist name Yoko Ono / Plastic Ono Band .
