Yoko Ono / Plastic Ono Band is Yoko Ono's first solo studio album . At the same time, including the three avant-garde albums with her husband John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band's live album, it is Yoko Ono's fifth album. It was released in the UK and USA on December 11, 1970.

History of origin

Before the release of the first studio album Yoko Ono / Plastic Ono Band , Yoko Ono and John Lennon released three singles under the names Plastic Ono Band and John Lennon (Yoko Ono) with the Plastic Ono Band , with Yoko Ono the B-side and John Lennon the A-side and sang:

  • Give Peace a Chance / Remember Love (Plastic Ono Band - Released July 4, 1969 [US: July 7, 1969])
  • Cold Turkey / Don't Worry Kyoko (Mummy's Only Looking for a Hand in the Snow) (Plastic Ono Band - Released October 17, 1969 [US: October 20, 1969])
  • Instant karma! (We All Shine On) / Who Has Seen the Wind (John Lennon (Yoko Ono) with the Plastic Ono Band - Released February 6, 1970 [USA: February 20, 1970]).

None of the single b-sides should be used for Yoko Ono's first album.

From April 1970, Yoko Ono and John Lennon underwent primary therapy with Arthur Janov in London for four weeks , followed by four more months in Los Angeles , California .

Arthur Janov developed the primary therapy psychotherapeutic treatment method. This is based on the assumption that catastrophic, painful (traumatic) psychobiological experiences in early childhood can have a lasting negative impact on the entire development and later life of people and that their negative effects can be mitigated and reduced by reliving these experiences and experiences.

The recordings for the John Lennon album John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band , which was lyrically significantly influenced by the primary therapy, began two days after returning from the USA on September 26, 1970 and ended on October 27, 1970.

During the recording sessions on October 8, 1970, Yoko Ono's album Yoko Ono / Plastic Ono Band was also completed, which as a whole was also influenced by primary therapy. The music on the album seems improvised and even more minimalistic than on John Lennon's album. Yoko Ono mentions in the text accompanying the Onobox CD London Jam that the songs were created from jam sessions without prior practice and that nothing was changed musically afterwards, except that train noises were added (with Paper Shoes ). “John and I felt that we had created 'New Music' together, a mixture of avant-garde jazz rock and East and West”.

The song AOS is not one of the original recordings of the album, it was recorded on February 29, 1968 during a rehearsal for a concert by Yoko Ono in the Royal Albert Hall . In Greenfield Morning I Pushed to Empty Baby Carriage All Over the City a tape was used in which George Harrison sitar plays theme of the song, the two miscarriages of Yoko Ono. The song Paper Shoes is based in the first part of the song on train noises, this rhythm is then maintained. The lyrics of the songs as well as the singing also seem improvised and often consist of just one word (Why , Why Not , Paper Shoes and Touch Me) and / or sounds that are performed by Yoko Ono in different pitches.
