Feeling the space A story
1974

Feeling the Space is the fourth solo studio album by Yoko Ono . At the same time, including the three avant-garde albums as well as Some Time in New York City with her husband John Lennon and the live album of the Plastic Ono Band, it is Yoko Ono's ninth album. It was released on November 16, 1973 in the UK and on November 2, 1973 in the US.

The artist named on the cover was Yoko Ono with The Plastic Ono Band & Something Different .

History of origin

John Lennon's apartment in the Dakota Building in New York

In February 1973, the Lennons began moving into an apartment in the Dakota Building , West 72nd Street in Central Park , New York , although at that time the problems with the threatened expulsion of John Lennon from the USA had not yet been legally clarified. while Yoko Ono was granted permanent residency in the United States on March 23, 1973.

In the text accompanying the CD compilation Onobox , Yoko Ono mentions that Feeling the Space was originally conceived as a double album and that the album was inspired, among other things, by attending the "International Women's Conference" in Cambridge in June 1973. The lyrics are also predominantly feminist .

The songs were recorded before the recording sessions for John Lennon's album Mind Games , which began in the Record Plant-East in New York in July 1973 , so probably in May / June 1973. The production work was carried out for the first time exclusively by Yoko Ono, so the collaboration with John Lennon was temporarily terminated, he only appeared sporadically with two songs on the album, but Lennon then took over the studio musicians of Feeling the Space for his album . The music on the album is partly pop-oriented and seems more commercial than the previous albums.

Other songs recorded but not used are:

  1. It's been very hard
  2. Mildred, Mildred
  3. Left turn's the right turn
  4. Potbelly rockers
  5. Warrior woman

These titles are available on the Onobox (CD 3).

After finishing work on the album Feeling the Space , Yoko Ono and John Lennon separated. Yoko Ono then asked May Pang, his secretary and press agent, John Lennon, to accompany him. John Lennon and May Pang had an affair during the so-called "Lost Weekend", which was supposed to last 18 months. On September 18, 1973, John Lennon and May Pang left New York City for Los Angeles .

Yoko Ono appeared in November 1973 for three days at the "Bitter End Club" in New York City, followed by another appearance on December 25, 1973 with David Spinozza at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine .

The last time the album Feeling the Space was performed was the Plastic Ono Band , until the album Between My Head and the Sky was released in 2009 .

Republication

  • The first release of the full album in CD format was made by Rykodisc Records on July 22, 1997 and includes two additional songs, both of which are not from the recording sessions. Learned to Stutter / Coffin Car is a live recording by John Lennon (guitar) and Yoko Ono (vocals and piano) that took place during "The First International Feminist Conference" in Cambridge. Mildred, Mildred is an acoustic demo recording and was recorded by Yoko Ono (vocals) and John Lennon (guitar). The exact recording dates of the two tracks are not listed in the CD booklet. The CD release was remastered by George Marino and Rob Stevens at Sterling Sound Studios . For the Onobox , six songs from the album by Yoko Ono and Rob Stevens were remixed, whether these were used for the 1997 re-release is not documented.
  • On July 21, 2017, the remastered album was released on CD and vinyl long-playing record (pressed on black and white vinyl) on the labels Secretly Canadian / Chimera Music . The CD was remastered by Greg Calbi and Ryan Smith, the vinyl album was remastered by Greg Calbi and Sean Lennon . The CD was distributed in a hinged cardboard cover. The re-release contains the five songs that originally appeared on the Onobox . The 2017 twelve-page booklet with illustrations states that the five songs were recorded with the same musicians on the album in late 1973 / early 1974. For the songs Left Turn's the Right Turn and Potbelly Rocker , a guitar accompaniment by Ben O'Cean was re-recorded in 1991.
