Approximately Infinite Universe is Yoko Ono's third solo studio album . At the same time, including the three avant-garde albums as well as Some Time in New York City with her husband John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band's live album Live Peace in Toronto 1969, it is Yoko Ono's eighth album. It was released on February 16, 1973 in the UK and January 8, 1973 in the US.
On the cover, the artist named Yoko Ono with The Plastic Ono Band .
History of origin
After the relative commercial failure of the joint album Some Time in New York City , which was released in June 1972, Yoko Ono went back to the Record Plant Studios in New York in October to November 1972 and recorded their second double album. Only the songs Catman and Winter Song were recorded in the Butterfly Studios beforehand. It was the last joint studio recordings with the band Elephant's Memory.
For Some Time in New York City , John Lennon, Yoko Ono and Phil Spector engaged the Elephant's Memory for the first time; after the recording was finished, John Lennon and Yoko Ono had an appearance with the band Elephant's Memory on May 11, 1972 on the Dick Cavett Show , es This was followed by two concerts in Madison Square Garden in New York on August 30, 1971 under the title One to One Concert, the corresponding live album Live in New York City was not released until January 1986. The last joint appearance with Elephant's Memory took place on 6. September 1972 during the benefit television show Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon where they played three songs.
Compared to their first two studio albums, the album Approximately Infinite Universe marks a temporary turning away from the avant-garde and towards melodic rock and pop music. The lyrics are also much more complex and mainly contain feminist themes, which she musically began with the song Sisters, O Sisters on the album Some Time in New York City .
On May 27, 1973, Yoko Ono performed at Town Hall in New York City and played six songs on the album with Elephant's Memory. In June 1973 an appearance on the WBAI radio station in New York followed.
The other recorded but unused song Joseijoi Banzai was released as a single in 1973 in Japan and on the Onobox in 1992 .
A version of the song Now or Never , recorded by Elephant's Memory and John Lennon, in which the Spirit Choir sings instead of Yoko Ono , was released in September / October 1984 on the compilation album Every Man Has A Woman .
