action

The focus of the story is Dot, a supposedly deaf and dumb girl who, after the death of her father, is sent as an orphan to her godparents, the Deer family. At first the Deer daughter Nina doesn't like this at all. So she tries to make life difficult for Dot. Dot quickly discovers the little secrets of her new family. Dot blames herself for the death of her father, who was killed in a traffic accident - she thinks that if she had been with him, she could have warned him of the danger.

Shortly after their arrival, Dot learns about the sexual relationship between Nina and her father Paul. Paul wishes he could end this relationship and tries to tell his wife Olivia about it, but is unable to say it. Olivia is meanwhile dependent on pills and doesn't notice anything anymore.

When Nina comes home one day early, she sees Dot playing the piano. When a piano string breaks, Dot curses reflexively. Nina now knows that Dot can hear and speak. Nina continues to play the ignorant and tells Dot at school about her sexual relationship with her father and that she wants to kill him. Dot then becomes more and more aware of what is going on between Nina and Paul, and she tries to help Nina.

Dot becomes the laboratory partner of Connor, the school's basketball star. Nina's best friend Michelle is very jealous because she is interested in Connor. As Dot and Connor work on their report, he tells Dot that he has attention deficit disorder and that he needs to improve his grades in order to receive a basketball scholarship. He's more and more interested in Dot, which is why he meets with her alone after a basketball game. He tells her a lot of personal things because he thinks she cannot hear him. Finally he says that he is still a virgin, which is why Dot undresses in front of him and the two sleep together. However, when Dot realizes that he likes her because of her supposed deafness, she goes home.

Nina claims she is pregnant and asks her father $ 1,000 to have the child aborted. When Paul finds tampons in Nina's handbag, he realizes that she lied and gets violent. In the escalating argument, Dot strangles Paul with a piano string. Olivia comes up and learns that Dot is not deaf at all. Dot and Nina pack their bloody things in their backpack.

The two girls go to a dance event where Dot dances with Connor. When she escapes the dance floor, Connor follows her and learns that she is neither deaf nor dumb. Thereupon Connor leaves the event, disappointed and injured. Then Nina and Dot drive to a river where they want to bury their backpack. Meanwhile, Dot tells Nina why she plays deaf and dumb: She wanted to be closer to her father so that she wouldn't be alone. When the two drive home, they meet Olivia, who has informed the police and the latter has presented herself as the perpetrator. In the final scene the two girls play the piano together, freed from their fathers.

criticism

"The slowly developing psychodrama of a dysfunctional family that gets lost in a series of clichés and is only superficially entertaining."

“The only convincing thing about the half-baked thriller by director Jamie Babbit (" Gilmore Girls ") is the oppressive camera work. The dialogues want to sound cheeky, but are rather clumsy and absurd. [...] Conclusion: oppressive pictures, hammered dialogues "
