The Safety of Objects is a 2001 American film starring Glenn Close and Dermot Mulroney . It tells the story of four families who, outwardly, have nothing to do with each other. However, as the film progresses, the connection becomes apparent. The film is based on several short stories by the writer AM Homes .

action

The action takes place after a serious car accident. Randy, his little brother Johnny, and Paul Gold were driving home from a concert. Randy asks Johnny for a can of beer, which will splash when opened. As a result, the car gets into the oncoming lane and almost collides with another car in which Paul's sister Julie is with her boyfriend. The vehicle with Randy, Johnny and Paul overturns, killing Johnny and injuring Paul so badly that he falls into a coma.

Annette Jennings had a love affair with Paul and is now suffering from Paul's coma. Randy kidnaps Annette's daughter Samantha. Since he thinks she is a boy, he hopes to be able to replace his dead brother Johnny with her. After holding her one night, he lets her go because he realizes she's a girl.

Esther Gold, who spent most of the past year looking after her son Paul, who is in a coma, turns a little more to her neglected daughter Julie. She wants to win a car for her in a competition in which the participant gets the car who touches it continuously for the longest time. In the delirium she falls into due to acute lack of sleep, she realizes that life is just a coincidence, regardless of whether you do things right or not, no matter how hard you try. Ultimately, she decides to help the whole family get on with their lives by saying goodbye to Paul and suffocating him.

Reviews

Opinions about this film are very divided because it actually has a soap character. It belongs to the category of films that show an excerpt from life that gets under your skin. The situation is not easy in all families, for example Annette Jennings has just divorced and Jim Train's career is going down the drain. Not everyone can relate to these sometimes sentimental scenes, which is why the film is sometimes classified as boring and meaningless.
What is interesting, however, is how the connections are slowly built up as the film progresses. At first the viewer does not understand how the different storylines are connected, but over time the architecture of the film is cleverly revealed through flashbacks . The title The Safety of Objects says exactly what the film is about: The actually ordered ("safe") life of four families is completely thrown off track by an event. The car accident affects the protagonists like a domino.
