Simple Club (proper spelling: simple club , to German: simple club; formerly The Simple Club ) is a predominantly German-speaking online - learning platform and video series on the web video platform YouTube for the subjects German , biology , chemistry , geography , history , computer science , English , Latin, mechanical engineering, mathematics , physics and economics . The offer is distributed over individual YouTube channels that specialize in the respective subjects, an Android and iOS app and a website. Simpleclub describes itself as Germany's largest provider of free online tutoring and advertises itself as the coolest tutoring in Germany . The target group are mainly school and university students .

Style, themes and content

The videos are characterized by the use of youth and colloquial language , simple expression, humor , pop cultural references, integration with social networks , edutainment elements and a simple, compact presentation of important information. This happens in a short time, the video length is therefore usually no longer than eight minutes and thus has the character of a crash course . A video usually begins with a question, a joke , a comparison and / or an anecdote and thus creates a transition to the actual topic. The videos end (mostly) with a short and concise summary.

history

The first YouTube channel TheSimpleMaths was founded on December 27, 2011. On the idea of YouTube tutoring Alexander Giesecke and Nicolai came Schork in the upper stage of the Nicolaus-Kistner-Gymnasium in Mosbach in the Neckar-Odenwald as a result of school underuse and the pursuit, something unique in the Internet to create. In 2013 Giesecke and Schork graduated from high school . Giesecke began studying mechanical engineering in Karlsruhe and Schork studied media informatics in Munich . They learned professionalism, among other things, from the workshops of the multi-channel network Mediakraft , in which they were a member and from which they and others were supported. On 12 January 2014, YouTube channels were TheSimpleBiology and TheSimpleChemics and 2014 on August 29 TheSimplePhysics opened on 8 September 2014 was followed by the trailer for the new unlocked offer. Since September 27, 2015, videos have also been uploaded to the TheSimpleEconomics channel . The three other channels TheSimpleGeography, TheSimpleHistory and TheSimpleInformatics published their first videos on September 15, 2016. In November 2016 simpleclub had 600,000 users, an increase of 40% compared to 2015. On September 10, 2017, the No Limit channel started, which deals with success. TheSimpleEngineers , which deals with mechanical engineering and engineering, started on October 4, 2017 . Alexander Giesecke told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that the goal was to offer free tutoring for all school subjects in the near future.

In July 2017 it was announced that a new, revised version of the website would be published this autumn. Users can already test this website as a beta. The most important new feature should be the possibility to specify a topic and to immediately get all the information available on this topic clearly arranged. In addition, there should be a new design and more exercises.

In November 2018 the name changed to simpleclub. In addition, the logo, the branding and thus the entire appearance were changed.

Since April 2019, videos with training content for painters and varnishers have been created in cooperation with the German lacquer and paint manufacturer Brillux GmbH & Co. KG . The aim is to create over 100 new videos, tasks and learning slips in order to digitally guide the training content to painters and varnishers.

Due to school closings in Germany in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the start-up is awarding its premium offer free of charge for one month at the request of the teachers.

App

On March 10, 2016, the Android version of the simpleclub app was published in the Google Play Store . The iOS version was released on March 29, 2016 in the App Store . A revised version of the app was released on October 5, 2016. The new functions include a dashboard , a favorites function, the addition of new subjects, exercises and PDF summaries (for unlimited members), revised search and filter functions and integration with Microsoft OneNote . The integration with OneNote was discarded over time and has not been usable since 2020 at the latest. Videos can be downloaded for later viewing without an internet connection.

The app was downloaded more than 100,000 times from the Playstore and was largely received positively. It was voted iPad app of the year 2016 by the iTunes editorial team .

The app is one of the most frequently downloaded iOS apps in 2016 in German-speaking countries. Chip Online rates the Android and iOS versions as good .

production

Every week, an average of around 14 videos are uploaded, which have not been published on YouTube since 2019 , but only in the app. Exceptions are the videos on the simpleclub channel - Die Lernapp . There learning tips and videos are uploaded, which give an insight behind the scenes of simpleclub. According to Frankfurter Allgemeine, the production time of a video is 12 to 20 hours. Viewers can use the YouTube comment function and the interaction on the Instagram platform to contribute video ideas and implementation suggestions.

TheSimpleClub GmbH was founded in 2015 in Berlin-Kreuzberg with the help of Mediakraft . Many of the tutors are university students. The company consists of 25 permanent and 10 freelance employees. According to their own information, the annual turnover is in the lower six-digit range.

The learning videos and the app are free .
