occupation

The Society is an American drama series with mystery elements produced by the video-on-demand provider Netflix and published there on May 10, 2019. The idea comes from Christopher Keyser .

Netflix originally renewed the series in July 2019, but in August 2020 the renewal was withdrawn and the series discontinued. The reason given was complications as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic .

action

Because of an almost unbearable smell in the small town of West Ham , the high school students are temporarily evacuated from the city. When they return that evening, however, they find no one there. Parents, siblings and other residents seem to have been swallowed by the earth. Telecommunication is only possible within the city limits. In addition, the entire city suddenly seems to be enclosed by seemingly endless forest.

It quickly becomes apparent that the young people are left to their own devices and have to establish new rules for living together in order to survive.

occupation

The synchronization of the series is created at SDI Media Germany based on a dialogue book and directed by Irina von Bentheim .

production

In 2013, Christopher Keyser and Marc Webb presented their series concept to the cable broadcaster Showtime , which, however, turned it down. On July 24, 2018, Netflix announced that an implementation of the idea would be produced. Keyser and Webb act as executive producers on the production. Webb also directed episodes 1, 2 and 10, while Keyser wrote the script in these.

Casting
When Netflix announced that it would produce a series based on the idea, it was announced that Kathryn Newton would take on a leading role. In November 2018, Rachel Keller , Gideon Adlon , Jacques Colimon , Olivia DeJonge , Alex Fitzalan , Kristine Frøseth , Jose Julian , Natasha Liu Bordizzo , Alex MacNicoll , Jack Mulhern , Salena Qureshi , Grace Victoria Cox , Sean Berdy and Toby Wallace were other actors presented.

Filming
The filming of the first season took place from July to November 2018 in Lancaster , Massachusetts . The series was shot in 4K with HDR .

reception

The series received mostly positive reviews. On the Rotten Tomatoes review page , it achieved a rating of 81 percent in 27 reviews and an average rating of 7.18 / 10 points. On Metacritic , the series received a rating of 68/100.

Oliver Junge compares The Society in the FAZ with earlier series such as Lost , The 100 and Wayward Pines , but clearly emphasizes that The Society does not focus on the mystery and therefore differs from the series mentioned: "The newest Lord of the Flies adaptation on Netflix once again poses the huge question of the principles of society. But what impresses the series with are emotions and tension. "
