Lothar Herquet (born May 30, 1767 in Johannesberg (Fulda) , † April 7, 1849 in Bronnzell ) was a German lawyer . Herquet was government director in Fulda and a member of the Hessian state assembly .

Life

Herquet came from a family who immigrated from Picardy to the Principality of Fulda in 1668 . His father Martin Herquet († 1802) was bailiff in the provost Johannesberg Fulda.

Herquet studied law at the universities of Marburg and Fulda and entered the service of the princely government in Fulda as an assessor under the last Prince-Bishop Adalbert von Harstall in 1793 . As early as 1795 he was appointed court and government councilor. At the time of Napoleon , the prince-bishopric of Fulda belonged to the newly established Grand Duchy of Frankfurt . Herquet appointed his prince primate in November 1810 as prefect in Fulda , where he had been director of the government justice department since May 1809.

In October 1813, after the Battle of Leipzig , Herquet was arrested on the orders of the Russian General Alexander Ivanovich Tschernyschow and taken to Hanau . There the Bavarian General Carl Philipp von Wrede had him set free again, but a short time later Herquet got into the battle of Hanau and was arrested again and taken to Steinheim am Main . Only after several days in detention could he be released on the orders of the Austrian Lieutenant Field Marshal Johann Karl Peter Count Hennequin von Fresnel and Curel.

With the Congress of Vienna Fulda came to the Electorate of Hesse . The Hessian government cut Herquet, contrary to the contracts, the greater part of his salary, they wanted to recognize him even as a councilor. When he resisted this illegal treatment and rejected the relevant rescripts , he finally felt compelled to take his leave in 1821. The Bundestag , which he called on to safeguard his rights, declared that it was not responsible.

In 1833 he became a member of the Hessian Estates Assembly, the 3rd state parliament, for the city of Fulda. He died on April 7, 1849 at the age of 81 on his estate in Bronnzell. Herquet was the author of several legal works. The University of Marburg awarded him the honoris causa doctorate in philosophy and law for his services on the occasion of their anniversary celebration . Since 1809 he belonged to the Masonic Lodge De la Paix in Fulda as its spokesman.

Lothar Herquet married Therese von Egloffstein on June 22, 1819 , the daughter of the princely Fulda treasurer, privy councilor and head stable master Heinrich von Egloffstein. Their son Franz Herquet (1802-1869) also became a lawyer.
