The dass Sägebett is a German experimental rock group from Darmstadt , which also operates under other names.

history

1988 to 1998

The band was founded in 1988 by the four Darmstadt school friends Daniel Albig, Raimund Elsner, Gerald Wrede and Hartmut Zech to perform at the so-called Abi evening, the evening before the Abitur award ceremony. The mixture of atonal recitations of cover versions , mixed with live Geflexe and Anarcho - Dada texts led to the concert being abandoned and the student being excluded from the Abitur. In 1991 Oliver Kischel succeeded Raimund Elsner, which was the first time something like a musician was in the band. Singer Zech had taken piano lessons a long time ago, Albig and Wrede on bass and drums were still beginners on their instruments. From then on, the quartet called their music style "Mondo-Beat" and praised the motto: "Our message is Mondo". The same adorns every publication of the group from the start. The vaulted cellar served as a rehearsal room under drummer Wrede's shared apartment , but Zechs and Albigs also sometimes rehearsed. The first EP Super die Freighter was released in 1992 , on which all four titles have the theme of Rhine shipping in common. For the release, the band members founded the label Declaration of Santo, which to this day is home to all releases related to the band. In 1993 the audio cassette Peter und die Tauben was released with eight titles and in the same year the EP Tritt das Leder , a recording with the local football club FC Piesels. In addition, the title Uranus appeared on the 3rd Darmstadt sampler . The following year the debut LP was released, Du bist einpulver . The band meanwhile devoted themselves more intensively to their avant-garde version stahljustiz, with which they produced the musical Maxi Schickl (1994) and the CD 2 Squares on the Way to the Earth (1996). In 1997 the first CD from The dass Sägebett followed, Tomorrow you must be fish again . Recorded in the newly occupied rehearsal room, conveniently also the recording room of Lolo Blümler's Sesame Studio.

1999 to 2009

Since singer Zech had to take his stonemason master’s examination in Aschaffenburg for over a year and a half , the CD music by people who have a lot of problems consisted of rather long instrumental improvisations in 2000. The CD Der Jubilar was recorded with the side project Autoquartett . stahljustiz appeared several times with the new musical Dance Bader, dance , a play about the RAF . In 2002 the Picture Disc Jazz was released for sick children . This includes studio recordings that were last recorded and mixed in the Darmstadt Sesame Studio, where all of the band's recordings had been made since 1992. The rehearsal room was relocated to the old Weiterstadt substation , where the bassist Albig's architecture office was also at home. In late summer, the Mainz-based musician and performance artist “Brandstifter” joined the group as a permanent fifth member. This was the last line-up change to date. The first work of the new formation was presented Christenrock , a CD with cover versions of sacropop songs from the seventies . The recordings were made in 2003 in a studio in Braunschweig . The band had bought the date cheaply on Ebay , a method that the band stayed true to over the next six albums. In addition to the rock numbers, the band took time to record and plan their electronic avant-garde concept performances with stahljustiz. The musical Trans-Sahara (2003) was created as well as the two-hour epic The 7 Wonders of the World between 2005 and 2007. The dass Sägebett, meanwhile, released the EP Riding Lesson (2005), the CD Disguised as Your Mother (2006), the double LP Die Erde ist ein Scheide (2009) and a best-of compilation called The Distance Between Thumb and Middle Finger . Under the name Autoquartett, the band released the Nürburgring CD at the end of the first decade of the 21st century , with Formula 1 racing impressions recorded with guitars and cordless screwdrivers, as well as a box with ten disks , each with a composition lasting several seconds per disk. The tracks couldn't be longer, as MP3s were deliberately omitted and the tracks were saved as wav files .

Since 2010

In 2011 the band left the substation and moved into a new rehearsal room, again in the basement of the architectural office that had also moved. She's still rehearsing there today. The band spent the beginning of the new decade with recordings and performances of their offshoot stahljustiz. For example with the puppet musical Kernkraft . In 2013 Gerald Wrede opened the record store “Musik als Hilfe” in Darmstadt, through which the band's products have been available exclusively since then. A studio was also built there. A series of The-dass-Sägebett publications began every year: in 2014 the CD Musik als Hilfe , recorded in Hanover , followed in 2015 by Pictures of My Taste , an LP recorded in Ockenheim in a picture frame with canvas print, and the CD Das recorded in Duisburg Behavior of the others in 2016. In the same year guitarist Oliver Kischel temporarily withdrew from the band after more than 25 years without officially leaving the band. Since then, The dass Sägebett have been active again as a quartet, just as they did before Brandstifter's entry in 2002.

In December 2018, the group released their long-playing record Today it will no longer be there with unedited rehearsal room recordings. Oliver Kischel was still involved in all of the recordings.

Concerts

The dass Sägebett has been giving a concert in their home town of Darmstadt every December since 1991, often opened by one of their offshoots such as stahljustiz or Autoquartett. In addition, their concerts are of a more sporadic nature. However, the band likes to look for venues near the studio in which they are currently recording in order to be able to play a performance there the evening before the recording. There are also appearances in Negativ in Frankfurt , in Eimer in Berlin and at the invitation of Knarf Rellöm in Hamburg , in the former Heinz Karmers Tanzcafé . She was the opening act for Cosmic Psychos in Saarbrücken (1992), together with Anus Presley in Frankfurt (1996) and together with Mutter (2001) and Die Eradierer (2003) in Darmstadt. In addition, The dass Sägebett played several times in Mainz, also in Wiesbaden and other Hessian cities.

Offshoot

steel justice

It was clear to the members of The das Sägebett early on that the corset of drums, guitar, bass and vocals would be too tight for them in the long run if they wanted to incorporate experimental and live performances . That is why the steel justice system was founded in 1992 in order to have more freedom. They took the band name from the film of the same name, which is originally called Steels justice and is about a Mr. Steel who commits vigilante justice . The absurdity of the Germanized distribution title corresponded to the band's motto “Incredible but true”. The first appearance in the blue paper suits and the oversized industrial coffee filters on the head was the reenactment of the first The-dass-Sägebett-Concert as an electric version in 1993. Before that, a video installation had already been created in which they imitated various stereotypes of mass murderers in five-minute films and provided the whole thing with gloomy sounds during the performance.

stahljustiz´ most widely used format is the appearance in a kind of musical or opera. In self-painted backdrops in which the band members act expressively to pre-produced full playback . Several productions were created for this: Maxi Schikl , Trans-Sahara , Dance Bader, dance , The 7 Wonders of the World, and Kernkraft , the latter is a hand puppet show. All of these productions tell a story, each between 30 minutes and 100 minutes long, musically experimental, humorous and bizarre. Another appearance in self-painted cardboard backdrops was 2 squares on the way to earth , in which the titles of the debut CD were optically implemented.

stahljustiz also gave concerts that were not based on full playback, but were played conventionally with synthesizers and keyboards . The band played the so-called world wonder epic several times live. The musicians also gave a concert in an empty swimming pool , which they had previously covered with foil, under which they made music and filmed themselves and projected the recordings in the auditorium onto television. As early as 1994, they were playing on four organs on a rotating platform , making them their own Lesley. In 2007 they put the aggregate states into music live. On August 10th, 2008 stahljustiz played the entire record Architecture & Morality by Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark in four public places in Darmstadt under the project name “Multiple sound generator” . They were many meters apart so that passers-by and listeners could only hear the individual musician, and in order to be able to enjoy everything together, they had to go to the center of the square.

Car quartet

Under this title, the band releases bulky pieces, often with a conceptual superstructure. In contrast to stahljustiz, the titles and works are mostly not of an electronic nature, but were created on conventional instruments. An exception is the first appearance in the Golden Crown in the winter of 1996, when the musicians disguised themselves as angels and played Christmas carols on a stylophone under the motto "Stylo Night" , and another participant disguised as Santa Claus distributed numbered car quartets to the audience.

Further actions under pseudonyms

  • Appearances in the Darmstadt Golden Crown as the opening act for The dass Sägebett under the name Tel-Info or Duo Naturstein & die singenden Phantasten .
  • In 2008, the group disguised themselves as rabbis and made Jew-Punk of themselves as The Rabbiators in the opening act .
  • In 2010 they appeared as Vibrofighters in the Golden Crown .

Label

Declaration of Santo

The label was founded in 1992 by The dass Sägebett in order to be able to publish their own music at all. Since then, all of the band's sound and image carriers as well as those of the stahljustiz and Autoquartett offshoots have appeared on it. Other artists on the label are Bormuth , Wrede and Ferien vom Ich .
