Friedrich Theodor Frerichs , since 1884 von Frerichs (born March 24, 1819 in Aurich , † March 14, 1885 in Berlin ) was a German internist and pathologist. He is considered the founder of experimental clinical medicine.

life and work

Friedrich Theodor Frerichs was the son of the innkeeper Frerich Jürgens Frerichs and Theda Frerichs (née Rhoden). Frerichs studied medicine at the University of Göttingen from 1838 to 1841, like his brother Jürgen (1834-1837) before. After his doctorate (February 20, 1841), he worked for four years as an ophthalmologist and surgeon with his own practice in Aurich, but returned to Göttingen in 1846, where he completed his habilitation and dealt with physiological-chemical examinations. His first publication came out in 1845 under the title "Studies on the Bile". In 1848 he became an associate professor at the University of Göttingen. His areas of specialization were mainly physiological-chemical examinations, the medical outpatient clinic and clinical cadavers. In 1850 he was appointed to the University of Kiel . This is also where his publication “Bright's Kidney Disease and its Treatment” came out. During the Schleswig-Holstein uprising he took over the management of the military hospitals in Rendsburg as a military doctor . In 1852 Frerichs was appointed to the University of Breslau and finally in 1859 to succeed Johann Lukas Schönlein at the Charité in Berlin, where he became director of the medical clinic. Paul Ehrlich was his assistant there from 1878 to 1885. In 1853 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . At the same time, he later ran a practice in his home. In 1882 he founded the German Society for Internal Medicine as the first chairman and opened the first internist congress in Wiesbaden. He was the 1st chairman from 1882 to 1884. Since 1862 he was an elected member of the American Philosophical Society .

The focus of Frerich's research was on metabolic processes in the liver and kidneys , related diseases and their diagnosis . Bernhard Naunyn , one of his students, described him as confident and unshakable. Frerichs died on March 14, 1885 of a stroke, according to his assistant Krönig of an overdose of opium . He was buried in the Old St. Matthew Cemetery.

The Theodor Frerichs Prize awarded by the German Society for Internal Medicine is named after him. Cardiological stations in the medical departments of the University Clinics in Heidelberg (Ludolf Krehl Clinic) and Freiburg bear his name.

The Swiss embassy in Berlin is now located in his former home . He had it built for himself and his family between 1869 and 1870.

Trivia

Dostoyevsky described the visit to Frerichs in letters to his wife:

“The prince and one of his acquaintances… confused me very much: they think I should rather go to Soden and not to Ems , because Ems is a deep valley in a ravine, very damp and rainy. For me, however, damp weather is more harmful than anything else. They tried to convince me to go to a famous Doctor Frerichs in Berlin and ask him for his opinion "

“The next morning I was at ... Frerichs. This light from German science lives in a palace (literally). When I was waiting for my call, I asked another patient how much one would pay Frerichs and he replied that this was not fixed, but that he would give 5 thalers himself. I decided to give him three. He spends three, at most five minutes on each patient. He didn't keep me there for more than two minutes, just touching my chest with the stethoscope. Then he spoke only one word: 'Ems', sat down in silence and wrote two lines on a scrap of paper. 'Here you have the address of a doctor in Ems, tell me that you are from Frerichs.' I put down three talers and left. The way was worth it. "
