Theodor Meyer , from 1846 Meyer-Merian (born January 14, 1818 in Basel ; † December 5, 1867 ibid), was a Swiss physician and writer .

Life

Theodor Meyer-Merian was the son of the businessman Daniel Meyer vom Pfeil. The mayor of Basel, Adelberg Meyer zum Pfeil, was one of his ancestors . Meyer-Merian graduated from the Basel School of Education . In 1837 she was enrolled at the University of Basel . He studied medicine and spent two semesters at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau . He was also able to continue his education at the Charité in Berlin for a while . After he returned to Basel, he became in 1841 with a dissertation for liver cancer to Dr. med. PhD . He then worked as an assistant doctor to Karl Gustav Jung . During this time he began his writing work.

Meyer-Merian 1846 opened his own medical practice and habilitated at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Basel, where he thus lecturer was. In 1846 he married Elonore Merian from the old Basel patrician family Merian and from then on bore the double name Meyer-Merian . Meyer-Merian struggled with the medical profession and his practice, which is why he gave it up again in 1851 and took over the post of hospital master at Basel's Bürgerspital . He held this office until his death. He reorganized the hospital system, combined with plans for structural expansion, and contained the typhus and cholera epidemics .

Meyer-Merian, who as a popular writer saw an educational mandate for himself and his writings, was President of the Society for the Good and Charitable Basel in 1855 and co-founder of the Basel Medical Society in 1860 . In 1863 he was one of the founders of general nursing . In 1867 he saw the performance of his work Samuel Henzi and died a short time later of liver cancer .

The painter and graphic artist Carl Theodor Meyer-Basel was his son, the architect and art historian Peter Meyer his grandson. He found his final resting place in the Hörnli cemetery .
