Theophil Friedrich Hack , von Hack from 1876 (born October 11, 1843 in Meimsheim ; † January 15, 1911 in Urach ), was the city ​​councilor of Stuttgart with the honorary title of mayor from 1872 to 1892 .

Newcomers from a poor family

Theophil Friedrich Hack was born in poor conditions in Meimsheim near Brackenheim in what is now the Heilbronn district. The boy was considered highly gifted and was encouraged accordingly. In 1857 he began training with the mayor and administrative actuary in Meimsheim. 1860 followed by training as a notary. In 1861, Hack completed his Abitur as an external candidate at the renowned Eberhard-Ludwigs-Gymnasium in Stuttgart .

Hack then studied camera and criminal sciences at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . In 1864 he passed the first and in 1865 the second higher state examination. In 1866 he received his doctorate in Tübingen with Albert Schäffle . He worked as a trainee lawyer in Brackenheim and as a senior actuary in Cannstatt . In 1867 he became an employee of the Württemberg economic politician Ferdinand von Steinbeis and the Stuttgart city councilor Heinrich von Sick . In 1868 he received a teaching position at the political science faculty of the University of Tübingen, in 1869 he was appointed professor there at the age of 27.

On June 18, 1872, Theophil Friedrich Hack was elected by an overwhelming majority (6033 out of 6145 votes) to succeed Heinrich von Sick, the Stuttgart city school, and sworn in in his office in September of the same year. During his 20-year term in office, Stuttgart developed from a tranquil residential city to an industrial metropolis. During his tenure, Stuttgart grew from 90,000 to 144,000 inhabitants.

Under Hack, the city's social and health services were reorganized, a tram network was built and the water supply improved. In addition, the first specialist offices in Stuttgart were created, for which Hack brought academically trained technicians to the city administration. In 1891 he founded the Stuttgart professional fire department .

Urach 1912

Theophil Friedrich von Hack was a member of the Württemberg state parliament from 1882 to 1884, but after only two years he had to resign for health reasons. Already for this reason actually represented in the office of the city school council by the paid councilor Karl von Göz , he became so ill in 1892 that he also gave up his office as Stuttgart city school school and retired only 49 years old. He spent the last years of his life with his wife in Urach at the foot of the Swabian Alb . Theophil Friedrich von Hack died there on January 15, 1911 at the age of 67.
