The Thetis-class is a class of frigate- sized inspection vessels in service by the Danish Navy since 1991. The four ships were built by Svendborg Skibsværft A / S in Svendborg on Funen .

history

HDMS Hvidbjoernen (F360)

The four ships of the Danish Navy entered service in 1991 and 1992. Among other things, they are used for coastal protection off Greenland and Iceland . In order to enable year-round use also in northern latitudes, the ships of the Thetis class can break ice up to a thickness of 80 cm.

The somewhat unusually classified ships of the Thetis class are based on a design with a wide range of uses. The ships have the opportunity to take on tasks of the coast guard , carry out operations in the Arctic Ocean and also take part in combat tasks within the framework of NATO . In 2009, the Thetis was the command ship of Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1 (SNMCMG 1), NATO's permanent mine defense association.

The ships are the third largest in the Danish Navy , after those of the Absalon class and the Iver Huitfeldt class .

Naming

The Thetis , the Triton and the Vædderen ( Danish : Aries (constellation) ) were all named after symbols of Norse mythology , only the Hvidbjørnen (outdated Danish: polar bear ) was named in honor of the native animal in Greenland.
