Atli Pætursson Dam
Atli Pætursson Dam , or Atli Dam (born September 12, 1932 in Tvøroyri , Faroe Islands , † February 7, 2005 in Tórshavn ) was a Faroese politician ( Javnaðarflokkurin ).
He was Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands for 16 years and party leader of the social democratic Javnaðarflokkurin for 21 years .
education and profession
In 1964 Atli Dam finished his training as a mechanical engineer (cand. Polyt.). Until 1970 he worked as an engineer at the Danish company Haldor Topsøe .
politics
Atli Dam was elected for the first time in 1970 as a member of the Faroese parliament for the Social Democrats and was Minister for Fisheries in the Faroese state government of Prime Minister Kristian Djurhuus from March to December 1970 .
In December 1970 Atli Dam became Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands for the first time and was able to hold this office until 1981. Another term lasted from 1985 to 1989 and his third from 1991 to 1993. He left office for health reasons in favor of his successor, Marita Petersen .
At the same time he was from 1970 to 1994 Løgtings MP (1970–1990 for the constituency Suðuroy and 1990–94 for Südstreymoy ) and one of the two Faroese representatives in the Danish Folketing from 1990 to 1994. In the Nordic Council , he represented his country from 1989 to 1991.
From 1972 to 1993 he was also the chairman of the Faroese Social Democrats and, like his father, was one of the heavyweights of Faroese politics.
Atli Dam was considered a particularly skilled negotiating partner. Among his greatest political successes the transfer of expertise is the Faroese mineral resources in 1992 by the then Danish Prime Minister Poul Schlüter expected to Faroese autonomy government. So the Faroe Islands have z. B. the power of disposal over the presumed oil fields in the Landsockel - an economic branch which, if the drilling is successful (as of July 2006), could lead to the economic independence of his country from Denmark.
family
Atli Dam was the son of Petur Mohr Dam and Sigrid Ragnhild (nee Strøm from Trongisvágur ). He was initially married to Ása Hátún (* 1932), from whom he separated in the mid-1960s. From this marriage comes the daughter Helena Dam á Neystabø (* 1955), multiple minister in the state government, who has played an essential role in Faroese politics for many years. He later married Oddvør Sólva Kára Hovgaard (* 1941) from Hov , Suðuroy .
His niece Rigmor Dam has been the Faroe Islands' Minister of Culture since September 2015.
Faroese musician and actor Dánjal Dam á Neystabø is his grandson.
