Thomas Grader (born March 22, 1989 in Sankt Veit an der Glan ) is a former Austrian cross-country skier .

Career

Graders, in stable home in the Mölltal, began at the age of six years, first with football and played as a goalkeeper first and then as a striker. At the age of 14 he started cross-country skiing in winter and competed in his first cross-country skiing race in the winter of 2003/04. In the following years Grader ran almost exclusively state and Austria Cups. At the Austrian championships in 2006 he won the silver medal with the Carinthian relay. For the 2006/07 season he finally made his international debut and started in the Alpine Cup. After he finished third in the junior race in Cogne in January 2007 , he was nominated for the Austrian C-squad. In February Grader started at the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival 2007 in Jaca . After rank 38 over the 7.5 km in classic style, he reached rank 37 over 10 km.

Grader completed his Matura at the Bundes-Oberstufenrealgymnasium Lienz in the summer of 2007 and then completed basic training with the Austrian Armed Forces and came to the Army Competitive Sports Center in Hochfilzen as a competitive athlete . At the Austrian Championships 2007 in Eisenerz shortly before Christmas, he missed a top position in 16th in the sprint and 18th in the 15 km individual race. Even in the 10 km individual race in Göstling an der Ybbs in January, he only ran after the best of his compatriots. With the 2008/09 season he played his last season as a junior and reached various top 10 placements in international junior races. At the Winter Universiade 2009 in Yabuli he finished 28th over the 10 km before falling back to 45th place in the pursuit.

In preparation for the 2009/10 season, Grader was injured in a training accident and broke a wrist bone in his right wrist . As a result, the preparatory training was interrupted for several weeks, which made it difficult for graders to start the season. In January 2010, he secured his first national title in the pursuit in Obertilliach . At the U23 cross-country world championships in Otepää , Estonia , Grader took a good 13th place over the 15 km individual distance. In the pursuit, he fell back to 32nd place. A few weeks later he got a starting place at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo . Over the 50 km he crossed the finish line in 60th place. A start in the team sprint with Aurelius Herburger was planned beforehand , but this did not materialize.

At the Austrian Championships 2011 in Obertilliach managed graders together with Daniel Mesotitsch and Juergen Pinter after item success in tracking the previous year and the first national title in the season. 10 December 2011 grader was in Swiss Davos his debut in the FIS Cross-Country World Cup , but came only 40th to the finish line and missing the points. He completed his second and last appearance in the World Cup with the skiathlon in Lahti in March 2012, but was overtaken. At the Austrian Championships in Bad Ischl in 2012 , the grader came fifth over 10 km. On January 22, 2012, he also started in Lienz for the first time in the Cross-Country Skiing Marathon Cup and was the 26th first to collect cup points, with which he was only 120th at the end of the season because it was his only start in the series .

In the preparation for the 2012/13 season, Grader contracted tonsillitis several times , after which he had to undergo an operation. After that, he never got back to his old performance and has therefore not contested any international races since then.
