Thomas H. Collins (born June 25, 1946 in Stoughton , Massachusetts ) is a former American admiral and Commandant of the Coast Guard .

Life

After attending school, Collins studied at the US Coast Guard Academy in New London (Connecticut) , graduated in 1968 and then joined the US Coast Guard . A subsequent postgraduate study of the so-called "Liberal Arts" ( seven liberal arts ) at Wesleyan University he completed in 1972 with a Master of Arts (MA Liberal Studies). He also studied business administration at the University of New Haven , where he obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 1976 .

During his long military career, he was promoted to rear admiral in 1994 and was appointed commander of the 14th US Coast Guard District in the Pacific Area in Honolulu . He was then chief of the US Coast Guard's Procurement Office before becoming Vice Admiral Commander of the Pacific Area and Commander of the 11th District of the US Coast Guard in the Pacific Area. After he was Vice Commandant between 2000 and 2002, he was promoted to Admiral James Loy Commandant of the US Coast Guard and also to Admiral in June 2002 . He held this post until he was replaced by Thad W. Allen in 2006.

For his services, he has been awarded the Legion of Merit , Meritorious Service Medal and the Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal , among others .

After completing his active military service, he became a director of USIS Holding Corporation.
