Zdeněk Kárník

Zdeněk Kárník  (born June 25,  1931 in Dobré near Dobruška , † September 30, 2011 in Prague ) was a Czech historian and educator .

Life

Zdeněk Kárník

Kárník was born as the son of the merchant František Kárník. At a young age he was a. a. influenced by his older brother, František; this was assistant and later lecturer at the university for political and economic sciences. He was also strongly nationalist and during the war he supported the resistance against National Socialism . Zdeněk Kárník attended the F.-M-Pelcl-Realgymnasium in  Rychnov nad Kněžnou . From 1950 he studied at the Faculty of Social Sciences in Prague, which was incorporated into the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University in 1952 . In 1954 he became a teacher at the same faculty, in 1965 he became a lecturerqualified as a professor for modern Czechoslovak history. In the Prague spring 1968 he took part in political events at the faculty, in 1969 he had to stop teaching for political reasons and even leave the university the following year; his return was only possible in 1990 when he became head of the seminar for social sciences at the Institute for Economic and Social History. 1970–90 he worked at the Central Office for the Preservation of Monuments in Central Bohemia. His work appeared in the context of underground literature , where he published as editor of the illegal journal Historický sborník - Historisches Almanach , in the years 1978-1989, or under a strange name. He was or is still working at the Charles University in Prague, the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic , the Pedagogical University in Hradec Králové and the Faculty of Human Sciences, later at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Hradec Králové. In 1993 he was an honorary professor at the Ruhr University Bochum , in 1998 he completed a study visit to Vienna . From 1956 to 1969 he was a member of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia , he resigned from the party, and in 1970 his membership was withdrawn. His hobbies included skiing, traveling, and classical music.

Brief overview of works

Zdeněk Kárník initially focused on the history of the labor movement and that of the socialist parties, later his interest also expanded to the history of the First and Second Czechoslovak Republic (1918–1939) following the Austro-Hungarian period:  Socialisté na rozcestí: Habsburk, Masaryk či Šmeral?  ( The socialists at the crossroads: Habsburg, Masaryk or Šmeral?  1968, ext. 1996),  České země v éře První republiky ( Bohemian Lands during the First Republic 1918–1938 ), I – III (2000–2003),  Malé dějiny československé ( Short Czechoslovak History , 1867–1939) (2007). The professional credo of Kárník is: "Come to the causes of every phenomenon regardless of your own or others' previous opinion or conviction." In his habilitation thesis  První pokusy o založení komunistické strany v Čechách  ( First attempts to found the communist party in Bohemia ) he dealt with radical left groups, especially with anarchists and anarcho-communists . In his fundamental work on the "Socialists at the Crossroads" he explores in detail the development of social democratic politics in Bohemia during the First World War in the Czech, Austro-Hungarian and international political context. The extensive trilogy about the First Republic provides a comprehensive analysis and description of the political, economic, demographic, social, but also cultural or scientific development in the period between the two world wars. The book is provided with extensive picture material and tables, in the third part the tragic time on the way to the Munich Agreement is described in detail. The plant also researches developments in Slovakia and what was then Carpathian Russia (now Carpathian Ukraine ). The following (again extensive) work with the modest title Little Czechoslovakian History (1867–1939)  already takes up the topic from new positions: in principle, the time limit itself is already, because this indicates that the author had both the prologue of the origin of the first Czechoslovak state in the last period of the existence of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy , as well as the epilogue in the form of the First Republic. Although the presentation shows a certain tendency towards popular scientific description, the themes of the earlier “trilogy” are analyzed even more deeply in some places; more attention is paid to Slovakia. Compared to the "trilogy", the accompanying images are significantly expanded, and the texts for the illustrations are then edited in the form of extensive explanations. The editing activity of Prof. Kárník is also important: Karel Kazbunda,  Otázka česko-německá v předvečer Velké války  ( Czech-German question on the eve of the Great War , 1995),  Bolševismus, komunismus a radikální socialismus v Československu , Bolschewensku, I – V ( Communism and Radical Socialism in Czechoslovakia IV, 2003–2005),  K novověkým sociálním dějinám českých zemí , I – IV ( On the Modern Social History of the Bohemian Lands , I-IV, 1998–2001) etc. He also has a number of contributions , Articles and two children's books about a game of boys in the area around Handštejn Castle during World War II. His articles appear in the journals  Památkářské práce ( monument protection work ),  Acta Oeconomica Pragensia ,  Historický obzor ( Historical Review ),  Východočeské listy historické ( Historical Papers of Eastern Bohemia ),  Acta historica et museologica Universitatis Silesianae Opaviensie  , etc., but also in the thematic Enzykousse Enzyklopädie in various edited volumes and in publications in the field of monument protection.
