Robert Edward Kramek (born December 15, 1939 in Manhattan , New York - † October 20, 2016 ) was an American admiral and Commandant of the Coast Guard .

Life

After attending high school in Bayside (New York) , Kramek studied engineering at the US Coast Guard Academy in New London (Connecticut) and graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science (BS Engineering). He then began his military service in the US Coast Guard . In the course of his military career he completed further studies at the University of Michigan , Johns Hopkins University , the University of Alaska and the Naval War College .

In his career, he has been in command of USCGC Midgett , in command of the Coast Guard Base in Governors Island and as Rear Admiral in command of the 13th Coast Guard District in the Pacific Area and then the 7th District in the Atlantic Area. During this period he was also head of the task force on refugees from Haiti and coordinator of the regional drug control.

After serving as Vice Admiral Chief of Staff ( Chief of Staff ), he succeeded Admiral J. William Kime in June 1994 and served as Admiral and Commandant of the US Coast Guard until his retirement in 1998. Successor as Commander subsequently became Admiral James Loy . For his services he was awarded the Legion of Merit , among other things .

After retiring from active service in 1998, he moved into the private sector and was first from 1998 to 2004 president of the Americas Department of the classification society American Bureau of Shipping , where he was then its president and chief operating officer (COO). From 2007 he was a member of the board of directors of the oil company Rowan Companies .

In addition, Kramek was involved in numerous organizations such as the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE), the Council on Foreign Relations , the US Navy League and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME).

2009 awarded him California Maritime Academy of California State University an honorary doctorate as Doctor of Science .
