Thomas Schmid (born July 26, 1950 in Hägglingen , Switzerland ) is a Swiss journalist . He mainly writes on international politics.

life and work

From 1970 to 1972 Schmid completed a degree in Romance languages at the University of Zurich . In 1972 he spent for desertion five months in prison Saxerriet (Switzerland). Between 1973 and 1978 he studied sociology at the Free University of Berlin and graduated there in 1978 with a diploma.

Between 1979 and 1981 Schmid worked as an editor in the foreign editorial office of the daily newspaper in Berlin. In 1982 he was a freelance journalist based in Mexico City. He then returned to the daily newspaper for the years 1983 to 1994, where he was responsible for the foreign and opinion editors. In 1995 and 1996 he held the position of editor-in-chief there. Between 1996 and 1997 Schmid reported as a foreign reporter for the Wochenpost in East Berlin from Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia, Albania, Cuba, Congo, Israel and other countries. From 1997 to 2000 he worked as a freelance journalist, mainly as a reporter in the Balkans for publications such as the Berliner Zeitung , the profil (Vienna), Facts (Zurich), the Tages-Anzeiger (Zurich), the Badische Zeitung (Freiburg im Breisgau ) and the General-Anzeiger (Bonn) . In addition, Schmid wrote numerous articles on historical topics in Die Zeit (Hamburg), on cultural topics in the Basler Zeitung (magazine) and reports from the North African Maghreb and Latin America. From 2000 to 2001 he was appointed editor of Weltwoche (Zurich), first in the foreign editorial department , then culture editor, then journalist, then foreign reporter. In this role he wrote reports from Peru, Moldova, Belgium, Germany, France, Spain and Serbia.

From 2002 to 2004 Schmid worked as a freelance journalist and reporter in numerous countries in Latin America, the Maghreb, the Balkans and southern Europe, especially for Die Zeit, but also wrote articles for Facts (Zurich), the Frankfurter Rundschau , the profil (Vienna), the Format (Vienna), the Berliner Zeitung, the Tageszeitung (Berlin), GEO and the magazine Mare (Hamburg). From 2005 to 2007 he worked as a foreign editor and reporter at Facts (Zurich). From 2007 to 2008 he wrote reports from Venezuela, Guatemala, Argentina and Italy as a freelance journalist, especially for Die Zeit. From 2008 to 2015 Schmid was the chief editor of the Berliner Zeitung, initially responsible for the opinion department, from 2009 to 2015 he was a foreign reporter. Since 2016 he has been working as a freelance journalist, primarily on migration.
