Career

Schmidt started playing football at TSV Holzheim from Holzheim near Neu-Ulm . In 1980 he moved to the other side of the Danube and joined the youth team of the then second division club SSV Ulm 1846 . At the beginning of 1985 he moved up to the professional squad, on the occasion of the 3-3 draw against Blau-Weiß 90 Berlin , he made his debut in the 2nd Bundesliga on February 2 of that year and crowned his first appearance with the goal to 3-0 half-time. At the end of the 1984/85 season he got down with the team around Dieter Kohnle , Marcus Sorg , Erich Steer , Peter Assion and Günter Berti . In the following year in the upper league, the defensive player and his teammates managed to get promoted again immediately and played two more years with Ulm in the 2nd Bundesliga. Despite a coaching change from promotion coach Werner Nickel to Klaus Toppmöller in April 1988, at the end of the season 1987/88 there was renewed relegation, after which he left the club.

Schmidt moved to league rivals Eintracht Braunschweig . After three more years in League 2, he moved to SC Freiburg . With Freiburg he made it to the Bundesliga . Here he played for one year for Freiburg and two years for TSV 1860 Munich .
