Tim Cooney (born June 14, 1951 ) is an American sound engineer .

Life

Tim Cooney grew up in Van Nuys, California . Since he was aiming for a music career, he left his parents' home at the age of 15 and then lived with other musicians. After graduating from high school, he went to Charleston , where he joined a group that showed a daily comedy and music show on morning television. When the group's contract was terminated, Cooney began working as a circus clown and attended Ringling Brother's Clown College. After graduating there, he performed as a clown for another year before turning to training elephants for show appearances instead. He left the circus and worked for the zoo in Forest Park for three yearsin St. Louis . Taking care of elephants on sets of films such as Roar (1981), he came into contact with the film industry. There he began to work as a boom operator for Universal Studios before he increasingly worked as a production sound mixer. In this capacity he was involved in a number of feature films, beginning in 1983 with The Flying Eye , and TV series. For his work as a production sound mixer in the action film Cliffhanger , he was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Sound in 1994. His work on the series Mord ist ihr Hobby (1986) and China Beach (1989) as well as the television film Buffalo Soldiers (1998) earned him nominations for a Primetime Emmy Award in the Outstanding Sound Mixing category .

Cooney is married and lives in Dumaguete City , Philippines.
