Timo Meškank

Timo Meškank ( ˈtimɔ ˈmʲɛʃkaŋk ; born February 4, 1965 in Dresden ) is a Sorbian linguist and historian who teaches as a private lecturer at the Institute for Sorbian Studies at the University of Leipzig .

Life

After attending schools in Leipzig from 1971 to 1979 , Meškank then attended the Sorbian Advanced High School in Bautzen, where he graduated from high school in 1983. After completing his military service, he studied civil engineering at the Technical University of Dresden from 1985 to 1989 . 1988–1990 he was editor of the Sorbian student newspaper Serbski student . In 1989/90 he completed a six-month internship at Domowina-Verlag in Bautzen.

A scholarship from the Konrad Adenauer Foundation studied Meškank 1990-1996 at the University of Leipzig Sorabistik and history for MA , interrupted by a stay 1992/1993 at the Charles University in Prague as part of the German Academic Exchange Service , where he and Sorabistik Bohemian studies took.

After residencies in Bautzen, Prague and Warsaw, he was at in 2000, Humboldt University of Berlin with the work is culture - Empire goes: Czechs and Sorbs (Contact) 1914-1945 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD.) PhD .

Meškank has been working at the University of Leipzig since 2000. His research areas here are the present-day Sorbian language and contemporary Sorbian history. As part of the project Sorbian Intellectuals in the Eye of State Security, he systematically deals with the relationship between the Ministry of State Security and the Sorbs.

In 2008 he qualified as a professor with the text Statement Structure in Sorbian: Investigations into Syntax and Sentence Semantics (Verlag Dr. Kovac).

In addition to his academic work, he also writes Sorbian fiction and poetry . Since 2007 he has been a member of the Exile PEN , of which he is a member of the executive committee.
