Timo Shanko

Timo Shanko (actually Timo Kielnecker , * 1968 in Los Angeles ) is an American jazz musician ( double bass , electric bass , tenor saxophone ).

Shanko attended Santa Monica High School (graduated in 1986); At the age of eleven he began to learn bass, initially playing rock , blues and soul music . At the age of 14 he performed in various bands in his hometown. After discovering jazz, he decided to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston , graduating magna cum laude in 1989. In the early 1990s he moved to New York, toured with Eddie Kirkland as the band's musical director and played with various blues musicians. From 1993 to 1995 he led the band Prodigal Suns . Since the 1990s he worked a. a. with the Dennis González Connecticut Quartet, the Trio Fully Celebrated Orchestra around Jim Hobbs and the formation G. Love & Special Sauce , also with Jeff Platz , Joe Morris and the formation Skull Session . In 2004 he released the album Freedom Right Now (Skycap) under his own name , on which Keala Kaumeheiwa , Taylor Ho Bynum and Luther Gray participated. In the field of jazz he was involved in 17 recording sessions between 1993 and 2009. Shanko teaches at the Longy School of Music at Bard College .
