The Timorasso white wine is an autochthonous variety from northern Italy and a very rare variety from Piedmont , where it is approved in the provinces of Alessandria , Asti and Cuneo . In Italy, 51 hectares of vines were surveyed in 1999 , mainly in the valleys of Valle Grue, Val Borbera and Val Curone.
The vine has been known in the area from the hills near Tortona since the 15th century . In the 19th century they were often grown in an area from Novara to Tortona in the province of Alessandria and as far as Voghera in the province of Pavia . However, the variety has increasingly been abandoned in favor of fertile varieties. From 1987, it was revived by the winemaker Walter Massa. This led to a renaissance of this variety. The definition of a separate DOC is currently being discussed.
The late-ripening variety is vigorous and moderately productive. The varietal white wines have a strong acidity and a high alcohol content. The wine finds its way into the Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC for short) white wines of the Colli Tortonesi as a single variety or as a blend . Timorasso is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera )
