Timothy Lancaster West CBE (born October 20, 1934 in Bradford , Yorkshire ) is a British film and stage actor .

Life

Timothy West is the son of British actor Lockwood West and his wife Olive. Although he does not have a title of nobility himself, West comes from the family of Earl De La Warr, and thus from Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr . Both parents were on tour for most of the year.

West enjoyed his education at the John Lyon School in the London Borough of Harrow and a polytechnic before he first appeared on the stage in the play Summertime in the theater at Wimbledon in 1956 . Numerous engagements followed at other British theaters, including in Northampton and Salisbury . In the late 1950s, West became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company . West was on stage in their productions Timon von Athen and The Merchant of Venice . From 1980 to 1981 West was Artistic Director of the Billingham Theater and, for a few months, in 1982, Director of the University of Western Australia . Today West is Director of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art .

From 1961 West also stood in front of the camera as an actor, initially in predominantly British television series. West is considered an expert when it comes to embodying expressive characters. His roles included historical figures such as Winston Churchill , Mikhail Gorbachev and the Roman Emperor Vespasian . In the British miniseries Edward the Seventh , West appeared as Edward VII in 1975 .

Timothy West has been married twice so far. His daughter Juliet comes from a brief first marriage to Jacqueline Boyer in the late 1950s. West has been married to actress Prunella Scales since 1962 ; from this marriage come his sons Joseph West and Samuel West , who also works as an actor today. Joseph and Samuel West played Timothy West's sons in Edward the Seventh .

In 1984 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his services to the theater.
