Tirol Speed Marathon
The Tirol Speed Marathon was a marathon that took place every June between 2004 and 2007 and led from the Brenner Pass to Innsbruck . It was characterized by the fact that the finish was 785 meters lower than the start, which corresponded to an average gradient of 1.86%. A half marathon route from Matrei to Innsbruck was also on offer . The run was organized by the Turnerschaft Sparkasse Innsbruck , which also organizes the Innsbruck New Year's Run and the Innsbruck City Run.
The starting shot for the Tirol Speed Marathon was fired right on the border stone between Tirol and South Tyrol . After a four-kilometer warm-up lap through the Italian municipality of Brenner , the marathon runners crossed the border into Austria and then ran north on the Brenner road (B 182), which is closed to traffic . First of all, the Wipptal with the communities of Gries , Steinach and Matrei at the foot of the Serles was crossed. In the area of the community of Schönberg in the Stubai Valley , the Europabrücke was first crossed under and then the Stephansbrücke . In the city of Innsbruck you first walked past Bergisel with a view of the local ski jump and the Inntal chain beyond Innsbruck, then through Wilten with its basilica and finally passed the Triumphpforte and the Anna Column on Maria-Theresien-Straße before reaching the goal reached the town hall galleries.
Theoretically, the almost exclusively downhill route was ideal for personal bests, as a test run on the half marathon route in October 2003 showed when the 17-year-old Kenyan Eliap Kurgat set a new world record in 58: 43.9 minutes (the however, like all other times on this route, it was not recognized as an official record due to the gradient). However, the long downhill run was a challenge that you had to specifically prepare for in training.
