Titan RT ( spelling Titan RT ) is a 483 m long pedestrian suspension bridge opened in 2017 in the Harz Mountains . The rope bridge is located in the areas of Oberharz am Brocken and Thale in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt , the border of which runs through the middle of the bridge. The bridge hangs over the part of the reservoir of the Wendefurth dam that joins the air side of the Rappbodetalsperre dam .

The 483 m long structure is one of the longest pedestrian suspension bridges in the world and at 458.5 m it is probably the longest freely spanned section of all such bridges. When the Charles Kuonen suspension bridge opened in Switzerland in July 2017 , the building length was exceeded by 11 meters (494 m), but the referencing of the free span remained pending. For comparison: one of the longest pedestrian suspension bridges in the world is the Dodhara Chandani Bridge in Nepal. It is a total of 1,452.96 m long, but has only 225.4 m as the longest span.

From the 100 m high hanging bridge, bungee jumping is possible 75 m down with a gigaswing .

Geographical location

The pedestrian suspension bridge is located in the Harz / Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park about 50 m northeast and parallel to the dam of the Rappbodetalsperre, the highest in Germany at 106 m. It spans the surface of the water of the part of the Wendefurth dam that touches the air side of this dam, and thus the Rappbode valley . These localities are nearby: 1.9 km northwest of Neuwerk , a district of Oberharz am Brocken , and 2 km east of Wendefurth , a district of Thale . The Wendefurth pumped storage plant is located about 1 km east-southeast of the bridge .

history

The preparatory work for the bridge began in November 2016. After the abutment was completed, the rope bridge was suspended within four weeks in March 2017. It opened on May 7, 2017.

technology

From March to July 2017, the 483 m long pedestrian suspension bridge was probably the longest freely suspended section of all pedestrian suspension bridges in the world at 458.5 m. The maximum height above the ground is almost 100 m. The 118-  ton bridge is anchored in the slate cliffs on both sides of the valley with a pulling force of 947 t ; the 48 tension and compression anchors are up to 27 m long. The suspension ropes were anchored per abutment with 12 Dywidag anchor rods with a diameter of 57.5 mm. A total of 148 m³ (363 t) of concrete with 25 t of reinforcing steel was used for the abutments . The bridge has four main suspension cables (spiral cables) with a diameter of 65 mm and two stabilization cables with a diameter of 36 mm.

Two parabolically mounted wind load ropes run diagonally below the lower load ropes, which are anchored in the rock with 12 m deep Dywidag GEWI anchors with a diameter of 32 mm with a pretension of 50 kN. The bridge is braced diagonally downwards on these ropes, which stabilizes it laterally so that it does not overturn in strong winds and generally shows a dampened vibration behavior. The bridge is designed for a load of around 200 people with an assumed average weight of 80 kg.

The bridge's catwalk consists of grating plates that are integrated into the steel structure. The railing made of round steel tubes was secured with a wire mesh so that lateral protection is provided. The footbridge is 120 cm wide and has a 130 cm high railing on both sides, which is closed by stainless steel nets. The steel structure was made of structural steel (S355). At the transition to the concrete structure, a separate drag plate is attached, which bridges the movement of the bridge together with the temperature-related expansion.

Gigaswing

The Gigaswing is a pendulum jump, where you jump under the suspension bridge and swing on a 65 m long rope under the bridge. It can be done alone or as a tandem jump, during which two people jump at the same time.

To do this, you climb into your own jump area in the area of the suspension bridge and are attached to the rope system and secured there by experienced staff. Then you can perform the pendulum jump. After commuting, you are pulled back up to the jumping-off point with a cable and can continue your hike on the suspension bridge.

The height of fall above the Rappbode clearly exceeds the height of the classic bungee jump on the Kawarau River in New Zealand (43 m).

tourism

hike

The Hasselfelde - Rübeland hiking trail (HK 27) leads over the dam wall near the bridge . A few kilometers northwest of the bridge, this path crosses the Harzer Hexenstieg, which runs north past the Wendefurth dam and in sections in the Bode valley . In the surrounding area are, for example, the Rübeland stalactite caves ( Baumannshöhle , Hermannshöhle ), the western town of Pullman City , the Harz charring Stemberghaus with the charcoal museum and the show mine ore Büchenberg .

Megazipline double rope slide

About 100 m north-east of the dam of the Rappbodetalsperre is the Megazipline, the longest double rope slide in Europe. It was opened on November 11, 2012 and spans about 1000 m in length and with a maximum height of 120 m also the water surface of the part of the Wendefurth dam that adjoins the air side of the Rappbodetalsperre. The start is a little north above the dam near the tunnel of the state road 96 and the end point is on the edge of the Wendefurther reservoir. People hanging in a belt system can slide down there, and after a rapid “flight” they are slowed down by the centrifugal brake on the metal rollers; The slack rope acts as an additional brake.
