Tomahawk is located in north-central Wisconsin, on the Wisconsin River , a left tributary of the Mississippi, which is dammed up to Lake Mohawksin . The geographical coordinates of Tomahawk are 45 ° 28'16 "north latitude and 89 ° 43'48" west longitude. The urban area extends over an area of 24.19 km², which is spread over 20.1 km² of land and 4.09 km² of water. The city is completely surrounded by the Town of Bradley without belonging to it.

The US Highway 8 runs from west to east a few kilometers north past the town. The four-lane US Highway 51 runs north-south along the eastern outskirts of Tomahawk. The Wisconsin State Highway 86 runs after the west-east direction as the main road through the city until it reaches its eastern end point at the confluence with US 51 on the eastern outskirts of the city. Wisconsin State Highway 107 joins WIS 86 at its northern end point when coming from the south. All other roads are subordinate country roads, some unpaved roads and inner-city connecting roads.
A Canadian National Railway (CN) line runs through Tomahawk for freight traffic .
