Tomahawk is located in north-central Wisconsin, on the Wisconsin River , a left tributary of the Mississippi, which is dammed up to Lake Mohawksin . The Wisconsin State Highway 86 runs after the west-east direction as the main road through the city until it reaches its eastern end point at the confluence with US 51 on the eastern outskirts of the city. Wisconsin State Highway 107 joins WIS 86 at its northern end point when coming from the south. All other roads are subordinate country roads, some unpaved roads and inner-city connecting roads.

A Canadian National Railway (CN) line runs through Tomahawk for freight traffic .
