Thomas of Frignano

Thomas von Frignano (Italian Tommaso da Frignano ; * around 1305 in Modena ; † November 19, 1381 ) was a Franciscan . He was the 22nd Franciscan General Minister , Patriarch of Grado and was appointed by Pope Urban VI in 1378 . appointed cardinal .

Life

Thomas von Frignano came from a wealthy family from Modena . At an early age he joined the Franciscan Friars Minor and studied theology . After his studies he taught theology at the religious convent in Bologna . In 1352 he was appointed Provincial of the Order of Bologna, an office he held until 1360. In 1364 he was a founding member of the Faculty of Theology at the University of Bologna , where he worked as a professor in the following. On June 6, 1367 he prevailed against his opponent Tommaso Racani and was by Pope Urban VI. Appointed 22nd Franciscan Minister General in Assisi . On July 19, 1372 , Frignano was made Patriarch of Grado. On October 8, 1372 he was by Pope Gregory XI. sent to Genoa to act as mediator between Genoa and the Republic of Venice . His mission was successful. As a result, he appeared repeatedly as papal envoy to the court of King Ludwig of Hungary , Duke Albrecht III. of Austria and the Doge of Venice Andrea Contarini and mediated between the individual parties that were waging a number of conflicts in Northern Italy.

On September 18, 1378 Frignano was by Pope Urban VI. created a cardinal. He was one of the cardinals charged with the process of canonizing Saint Brigitte of Sweden in 1379 .

Thomas von Frignano died on November 19, 1381 and was buried in the church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli in Rome . Brigitte of Sweden was canonized after Frignano's death on October 7, 1391 by Pope Boniface IX .
