Trench is the fifth studio album by the US-American music duo Twenty One Pilots , which was released on October 5, 2018 on Fueled by Ramen. It is the band's first studio album in three years and serves as the successor to their fourth studio album, Blurryface (2015). The album is also the first release by the newly formed Elektra Music Group.

The album was preceded by the release of four singles. The first two, "Jumpsuit" and "Nico and the Niners", were both released on July 11, 2018. The third single "Levitate" was released on August 8, 2018. The fourth single, My Blood , was released on August 27, 2018.

production

Twenty One Pilots released their fourth studio album Blurryface on May 17th, 2015 . The album was in the top 200 albums on Billboard and had two top five singles, " Stressed Out " and "Ride", which ranked number two and number five on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively. The songs, along with the single " Heathens " from the Suicide Squad soundtrack , led the band to mainstream success in 2016 . From 2015 to 2017, the duo embarked on two world tours with the aim of promoting the album. After the last five dates of the tour , the "Tour De Columbus", the band began a one-year break on July 6, 2017.

The conceptual world of "Trench" emerged before any of the songs on the album had been written, and broke away from the band's regular songwriting process of creating the album song by song. It's unclear when Trench production began, but Tyler Joseph was working on the track "Bandito" back in 2015 while on the Blurryface Tour. Tyler Joseph produced the fourteen tracks on the album in his private home studio, while Josh Dun's drum tracks were recorded at United Recording Studios. Mutemath frontman and keyboardist Paul Meany co-produced and co-wrote much of the project, having previously worked with Twenty One Pilots on the TOPxMM Remix EP and on the Emotional Roadshow World Tour. Adam Hawkins mixed the album in its entirety. The deadline on which the album was completed was August 15, 2018, less than two months before the album was released.

Trench was mostly rated positively. Philipp Kause from Laut.de awarded four out of five stars and particularly praised the various genres in which the album moves. Even if, according to Jakob Uhlig from Plattentests.de, the album "has a few fillers in its total length, which unfortunately leave the album with a lot of potential", the album still offers him "an exciting experience over long distances". The album received six out of ten points from him.
